Russia-Ukraine war likely to steal focus at G20 foreign ministers’ meet today, China says India relations key

The G20 foreign ministers conference in New Delhi is expected to be dominated by the strained East-West relations caused by Russia’s war in Ukraine and growing worries about China’s aspirations in the world.

The absence of US Secretary of State Antony Blinken from the G20 foreign ministers’ inaugural dinner, which was hosted by External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, has sparked speculation that the highly contentious meeting currently taking place in New Delhi will be overshadowed by the Russia-Ukraine war.

As the senior officials from the Group of 20 convene, it is likely that the chasm between the United States and its allies on the one side and Russia and China on the other will grow even more savage. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Chinese Foreign Minister Qin Gang will also be present, competing for the support of non-aligned members of the group together with Blinken and Jaishankar.

Economic leaders reached agreements on a wide range of economic issues at the grouping’s summits held in Bengaluru last month under India’s presidency, including support for Turkey and Syria after a devastating earthquake, the global economy, climate finance, reform of multilateral development banks, sustainable finance, debt relief, safety nets, etc. The organisation was unable to send out a communiqué, nevertheless. In order to reach agreement on important global issues, all eyes will be on the foreign ministers’ meeting, which is being billed as one of the largest gatherings of foreign ministers ever hosted by a G20 presidency.

Mao Ning, a spokesman for the Chinese Foreign Ministry, stated that Beijing values its connections with India. Both countries, he claimed, were ancient civilizations with populations of at least a billion people. “Both of our economies are emerging, and we are neighbours. The interests of both nations’ citizens will be served by strong ties between China and India, he said.Although it has not yet been confirmed by Mao, Gang and Jaishankar met.
