Mallikarjun Kharge has become the new National President of Congress. Over 9,800 Congress leaders had voted. Of these, 7,897 votes were in favor of Kharge. At the same time, his opponent Shashi Tharoor had to be satisfied with more than a thousand votes. 416 votes were rejected. Tharoor has accepted his defeat. He tweeted and congratulated Kharge on the victory. Along with this, he called it a victory for the internal democracy of the party.

In the race for the new president, Mallikarjun Kharge was being told from the very beginning. The big reason for this is that from the Gandhi family to the Congress veterans, Kharge got the support. After Kharge’s victory, the question arises that how much benefit will the Congress get from this? Will the party change? Will the Gandhi family’s monopoly really end with the Congress party? Let’s understand…

What will change in the party with Kharge becoming the president?
To understand this, we spoke to senior journalist Pramod Kumar Singh. “Congress is passing through its worst phase. The party which once had the government in the entire country, today it has been reduced to two states. Even among them the situation is not much better. The election of the national president at such a time is a big deal for the party. However, if we look at some of its points, it seems to be moving more towards controversy than change.

  1. There may be a split in the party: Many leaders in the party want change. The Congress high command’s hand is being told over Kharge, while Tharoor is left alone. In such a situation, leaders who want change within the party can take a rebellious stand after the elections. Tharoor is liked more by the youth Congress. He also has a good presence in Kerala and other southern states. The split in the party may harm the Congress in these states. This also appeared during the counting of votes. When Saifuddin Soz on behalf of Tharoor faction alleged rigging. Soz demanded that all the votes cast from Uttar Pradesh be declared invalid. At the same time, after Kharge’s victory, Rajya Sabha MP Pramod Tiwari, who came from Uttar Pradesh, said that the loser makes excuses for defeat.
  2. Gandhi family will get more importance than Kharge: Pramod Singh says, ‘Congress was in power from 2004 to 2014. Even then this is what has been seen. Even though the Prime Minister was Manmohan Singh, every major decision was taken only with the approval of the Gandhi family. Once the ordinance passed by the Manmohan Singh government was torn up by Rahul Gandhi in a packed Parliament. The meaning is clear, even if Mallikarjun Kharge sits on the post of president, but all the major decisions will be taken only with the approval of the Gandhi family. If this happens, then there will not be much change in the coming time. On the contrary, Shashi Tharoor keeps his point with impunity. He has also stated his vision for the post of President. He can take decisions even outside the Gandhi family. Meaning if Tharoor becomes the president, then surely some big changes can be seen in the party.
  3. Agenda not clear: It is said that Kharge used to do what he was told. Even now, his nomination for the post of president was done in a hurry. Earlier the Gandhi family was pushing Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot for the post of President, but Kharge’s name had to be brought after the political drama in Rajasthan. Kharge’s agenda regarding the post of president is also not clear. In such a situation, even if he becomes the chairman, there is very little chance of any significant change.

Now know about Mallikarjun Kharge
Kharge was born in a farming family in Varavatti area of Bidar district of Karnataka. He completed his schooling from Nutan Vidyalaya in Gulbarga and then graduated from Government College here. Here he was also the General Secretary of the Student Union. After doing LLB from Gulbarga’s Seth Shankarlal Lahoti Law College, he started practicing law. In 1969 he became the legal advisor of MKS Meals Employees Union. Then he fought for the workers. He was an influential leader of the United Trade Union.
He joined the Congress in 1969 itself. Seeing his popularity, the party made him the President of Gulbarga Congress Committee. In 1972, he became an MLA from the Gurmitkal assembly seat of Karnataka for the first time. Kharge was elected MLA nine times from Gurmitkal seat. During this time he also held the post of minister in various departments. In 2005, he was made the President of Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee. He remained in this position till 2008. Elected MP for the first time in 2009.

Kharge is considered a trusted confidant of the Gandhi family. He also got reward from time to time for this. In 2014, Kharge was made the leader of the party in the Lok Sabha. After the defeat in the Lok Sabha elections 2019, the Congress sent him to the Rajya Sabha in 2020.
