It is generally said that 7 people in the whole world look alike but can two people have the same voice? We have a man today that sounds exactly like legendary Jagjit Singh. Dr. Anil Sharma is famously known as the “voice of Jagjit Singh.” He is not only born with his voice but also looks like Jagjit Singh to some extent. The best part is that he is also a ghazal singer. His ghazals and songs do justice to Jagjit Singh’s voice in every manner.

Jagjit Singh has changed the world of ghazals. He modernized it by introducing guitar, violin, and other musical instruments in it for the first time. This led to even the young generation developing an interest in ghazals. Today, everyone be it old, young, or middle generation likes to hear ghazal songs.

Dr. Anil Sharma makes us feel the presence of Jagjit Singh between us. He is a Lyricist, Composer, Singer, and Music arranger who has earned a huge name in the industry.

Life Story of Dr. Anil Sharma

Dr. Anil Sharma

Dr. Anil Sharma was born in a town in the Kurukshetra district of Haryana. Born and brought up in Haryana, Dr. Anil Sharma is worldwide famous today. His father was an Army Officer, hence had a disciplined atmosphere at home and no background in singing. Talking about choosing his profession, Dr. Anil Sharma said, “I developed an interest in singing at an early age. I used to sing school prayers and didn’t miss an opportunity to sing. As I grew up, my father told me to drop singing and make a career by becoming a doctor, engineer, etc. What could I do, I became a doctor. My first interaction with Jagjit Singh’s voice was during my college days. I heard his voice in a ghazal “Hazaro Khwahishein Esi” being played in a serial called “Mirza Galib.” I became his fan there and then. I started following him and listening to him. I performed the same ghazal onstage during a college function. Everyone got mesmerized and told me I am very close to Jagjit Singh and I should make a career in singing. I also learned so much from my guruji and here I am today. To date, I have composed 80-90 ghazals of my own.”

I got the honor to meet her on the occasion of Jagjit Singh’s 77th birthday. I was invited to perform at the event which was held to commemorate Jagjit Singh. There was a lot of pressure in my mind to perform in front of Chitra Singh. I got relaxed when she appreciated me and told me that I do justice to his husband’s voice.

What’s your favorite ghazal of Jagjit Singh

I worship Jagjit Singh and his works. I admire all his ghazals and songs. His life can be divided into 3 parts. The second part was Young/Romantic Jagjit Singh which phase started after his marriage to Chitra Singh. During this phase, he was at the peak of his career and sang many romantic songs. His ghazals reached every corner of the country. All three parts are favorites of mine. But today’s generation prefers to hear the 2nd part mostly.

His Ghazals will live long. The loud music of today can never provide the peace we get from listening to ghazals. They have a simplicity that directly hit the audience’s heart. I have found in my analytics that my songs get played mostly by the age group of 18-35 years after 6 pm. This shows how peaceful these ghazals are. I add my style to the ghazals but keep Jagjit Singh’s heritage intact in it.
