P. Chidambaram’s Attack On The George Soros Row

New Delhi: Senior Congressman P. Chidambaram responded to billionaire investor George Soros’ criticism of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and inquiries over Hindenburg Research’s report on businessman Gautam Adani by saying that he disagrees with much of what Soros has stated in the past and currently.
Tweeted Mr. Chidambaram, “Both in the past and in the present, I did not agree with the majority of what George Soros had to say. It is, however, absurd to characterise his comments as a “effort to topple the democratically elected government in India.””

During the Munich Security Conference on Thursday, Mr. Soros stated that the stock fall of business billionaire and alleged close associate Gautam Adani will undermine Prime Minister Narendra Modi, “opening the path” to a democratic renaissance in the nation.

The leader said in a series of tweets sent on Saturday from his official account that the Indian people would decide who would serve in and who would leave the country’s government. He also said, “I did not know that the Modi government was so feeble that it could be toppled by the stray statement of a 92-year-old rich foreign national.”

He suggested to “ignore George Soros and heed to Nouriel Roubini” in another tweet. Roubini reportedly cautioned that India is “increasingly driven by massive private conglomerates that might possibly hinder competition and kill new entrants,” as stated in Mr. Chidambaram’s tweet.

The CEO of Roubini Macro Associates, a New York-based worldwide macroeconomic consulting business, is Nouriel Roubini. According to nourielroubini.com, he is also the co-founder of Rosa and Roubini Associates and the head economist for Atlas Capital Team LP. Mr. Roubini forewarned of the approaching recession caused by the credit and property market bubble in a 2006 speech to the International Monetary Fund.

The Congress leader added the following in this conversation and in one of his tweets: “An open, competitive economy was to be ushered in through liberalisation. Oligopolies have been produced by the Modi administration’s policies.”

At a speech on Thursday, the 92-year-old billionaire philanthropist noted that PM Modi had been “quiet” on the subject and stated that PM Modi will “had to face questions” from foreign investors and Parliament over claims of fraud and stock manipulation at Mr. Adani’s industrial empire.

Mr. Soros’ comments were denounced by the BJP yesterday, which described them as a “vow to undermine India’s democratic processes.”After American short-seller Hindenburg Research accused Adani Group of participating in “brazen stock manipulation and accounting fraud” over a long period of time, the business has come under intense scrutiny. The Adani Group has denied the accusations, calling them unfounded.
