‘We have 4-5 dharmas, they should have their censors,’ says Javed Akhtar of the Pathaan controversy

Lyricist Javed Akhtar commented on the Pathaan song Besharam Rang controversy, saying sarcastically that every dharma (religion) should have its own censor board. The song, which features Deepika Padukone in an orange bikini, has enraged some people, who claim that the colour orange is sacred in Hinduism. Some have also objected to the film’s title, which refers to a specific ethnic group. Also read: Uorfi Javed jokingly told Javed Akhtar, ‘Hope you know apke jaydad ke teen hisse honge.’

Pathaan screening should be prohibited in Madhya Pradesh until some “scenes and costumes are corrected,” according to Madhya Pradesh Home Minister Narottam Mishra. The Madhya Pradesh Ulema Board had also sought a ban on the film for “misrepresenting Islam”.

“If he (the minister) thinks there should be a separate censor board for Madhya Pradesh, they (should) watch the film separately,” Javed Akhtar said. And if they are dissatisfied with the Centre’s film certification, we should not intervene; that is between them and the Centre.”

When asked about the recently formed ‘Dharma Censor Board,’ Javed joked, “There is one censor board in MP, one censor board in the centre, and one censor board in the state. What exactly is the issue? We have four or five important ‘dharmas,’ and they should be censored. Maybe then moulvis (Muslims) will start watching movies. Do it, do it, do it!”

“It is not for me or you to decide whether the song is right or wrong,” he said in response to the controversy. We have a company.” He stated that the public should believe the censor board’s certification and the cuts it recommends.

On Monday, Javed Akhtar spoke at the launch of Jadunama. It is a coffee table book that contains excerpts from his public speeches, interviews, and quotes. His remarks came a day before the Pathaan trailer was released on Tuesday. The film, directed by Siddharth Anand, will be released in theatres on January 25. The film was recently rated U/A by the censor board. the certification came after Besharam Rang suggested a few cuts to the song and asked to remove references like RAW and PM.
