Rajasthan will cut the cost of LPG cylinders in half starting in April

Rajasthan: The government of Rajasthan announced late on Monday that it will offer 12 cooking gas canisters to low-income families for 500 rupees ($6) each year. Typically, a family of four may survive on one cylinder for one month.

New Delhi: Rajasthan, which is controlled by the main opposition Congress party, will cut the cost of cooking gas in half for low-income households starting in April in an effort to ease their suffering from rising inflation in time for local elections in 2019.

The nation’s annual retail inflation rate for November was 5.88%, which is much higher than the central bank’s target rate of 4% but has decreased from 6.77% in October as a result of a more gradual increase in food costs.

The state is one of many to propose initiatives to aid families experiencing a crisis due to rising food and fuel costs following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Rajasthan has also announced plans to give residents 50 free electricity units each month. Other governments have taken actions, such as Uttar Pradesh, which lowered electricity rates and gave the impoverished 1,000 rupees in cash.

In 2016, PM Modi introduced an initiative that provided free cooking gas connections to low-income homes. Such households receive the first refill from energy providers under the management of the center for free.
