The Asian Games are quickly approaching, and Indian wrestling is mired in controversy. The most recent case involves the ongoing Asian Games trial

Wrestlers of various weight categories will compete in open trials on July 22 and 23 at Delhi’s KD Jadhav Indoor Stadium. Typically, the winners of such trials are awarded tickets to the Games. This time, however, this is not the case.

The wrestlers won the open trials, but they still have to wait to find out if they can compete in the Asian Games. Six wrestlers involved in the protest have been excused from this trial per the Sports Ministry’s instructions to the Adhoc Committee, which is currently in charge of the Indian Wrestling Association. These wrestlers will stand trial separately between August 8 and August 10, according to the ad hoc committee. They will face off against wrestlers who did well in the open trials in this competition.

Olympic medalists Sakshi Malik and Bajrang Punia, as well as wrestlers Vinesh Photag and others, are all participating in the protest. They are all demanding the ouster of Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, the former president of the wrestling association.

Squad will be revealed by July 23.

The deadline for revealing the names of Indian wrestlers competing at the Asian Games is July 23. The Indian wrestling team won’t be able to compete in the Games if the names are not sent to the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) by that time. This was impossible due to the wrestlers’ relief from the agitating open trial. The ad hoc committee has now come up with a solution.

The committee will choose the team based on open trials and will reserve the right to use the names of the wrestlers taking part in the strike. Following this, on August 10, a match between the players who did well in the open trial and the players who executed the strike will take place. In the event that the picketing players triumph, their names will be moved from the stand-by to the starting lineup.

This information has been confirmed by Ashok Garg, a wrestling expert who is a member of the Adhoc Committee established by the Indian Olympic Association.

According to other sources, a disagreement arose over providing relief to the six wrestlers who were on strike due to the open trial between a coach of Team India and the members of the adhoc committee. According to sources, there has been a disagreement over the schedule and details of the Asian Games open trials.

According to sources, wrestling experts Ashok Kumar Garg and Gyan Singh, who were members of the ad hoc committee, were in favour of exempting the six wrestlers on strike from open trials. At the same time, the Indian team’s coach does not want to make any concessions to any of the open trial players. He believes that all players should be treated fairly. No one should be given preferential treatment.

He believes that doing so would be an injustice to other wrestlers and young wrestlers who have won international medals. The coach suggested that top wrestlers establish additional concession criteria.

No open trial is denied by Deepak Punia and Ravi Dahiya.

No other international wrestler, excluding Ravi Dahiya and Deepak Poonia, has objected to competing in the open trials, according to Adhoc Committee member Ashok Garg. Their names will also be taken into consideration if they are injured, unable to participate in open trials, and request that the committee or sports ministry hold the trials in August.

In an open trial category, there can be at least 16 wrestlers.

According to Ashok Garg, no wrestler will be subjected to injustice. The best wrestlers didn’t ask for any concessions. They had all insisted that the trial take place in August. His trial will take place in August as a result. It is unclear if the top wrestlers from the open trial will take part in the trial alongside them or if only the top four wrestlers will.

Prior to this, only the top-4 wrestlers were allowed to attend the federation’s trial camp. All of the top wrestlers in the nation are being given the opportunity to compete in the trials. Top-4 wrestlers in the Under-20 and Under-23 age groups will also compete. Additionally, the top four competitors from the Senior National Wrestling Championship last year as well as the top four competitors from the National Ranking Wrestling Championship in the past will compete. In addition, every wrestler who competed in the 2022–2023 International Championship will take part. No such wrestler who is eligible for trial and is not getting a chance will be left in the nation in such a circumstance.

The six wrestlers on the dharna are all overseas training.

Six wrestlers are practising for the Asian Games while they are seated on a dharna. Sangeeta, Bajrang, Jitender, and Sakshi Malik are training in the US, while Vinesh has travelled to Hungary to compete in a Rank-4 tournament.

What exactly is going on?

On January 18, three of the top wrestlers in the nation—Vinesh Phogat, Sakshi Malik, and Bajrang Punia—started a sit-in protest against the government at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar grounds. They demanded that the government take action against former WFI President and MP Brij Bhushan Sharan over allegations of sexual harassment. The wrestlers later ended their strike and began preparing for the Asian Games trials after Brij Bhushan Sharan was charged.

The wrestlers on the dharna have asked the Sports Ministry and the Adhoc Committee set up by the IOA for some time to prepare for the trial. They have also demanded that the trial take place in August.
