For the first time since 2008, the impact player rule will be applied in the league. This rule allows teams to substitute a player from the bench in the middle of a game for any one of the playing 11. According to experts, this rule will lessen the impact of all-round players, which will be advantageous for teams like Gujarat, Lucknow, and Rajasthan.

We will learn more about this rule in depth in the subsequent tale. What is this rule, how will the teams apply it, who can they use as impact players, and what do the experts think of this rule?

First of all let’s understand about the rule

The Impact Player rule allows teams to switch out any player in the starting 11 for a bench player in between IPL games. After the toss, teams must announce their playing 11 and 4-4 substitutes. In the middle of the game, any one of these four can take the place of the player who was listed in the playing 11.

In both innings, the rule may be applied between one and fourteen overs. A team may use the player replacement rule only once during the course of the match. He has the option to take replacement up to the 14th over of the first inning or the 14th over of the second inning, if he so chooses.

What can the impact player do?

Players who have bowled or batted in the game can also be changed by the opposing team. The game’s impact player will get to bowl all four of his allotted overs. He will also be able to bat for the entire over. A team may only lose up to 10 wickets in a single innings.

Can foreigners be impact players too?

Yes, the foreigner can take the place of any player as an impact player if there are 3 foreign players in the starting 11. Only 4 foreign players from a team will be able to participate in a match this way. The impact player will only be an Indian national if there are already four foreign players in the starting lineup.

Additionally, any foreign player in the starting 11 may be swapped out for an Indian player. The player who leaves the field after being replaced is unable to return to the field during the game.

When can you use it?

This rule is applicable during an over, the removal of a wicket, a break, a tactical time out, or the conclusion of an inning. One of the players in the starting 11 will be replaced by the 12th player who touches the ground. Additionally, the replacement player must be disclosed to the on-field umpires by the team captain.

The umpire must also be informed when sending the 12th player to field in place of the injured player. The umpire will make a cross with both of his hands raised to signal the entry of the impact player onto the field.

Expert said – the effect of all-rounder will be less

Ricky Ponting, the captain of Australia that won the World Cup, and head coach of the Delhi Capitals claimed that the impact player rule would lessen the importance of all-rounders in the IPL 2023 . The teams will switch out the top order batter for a specialised bowler when batting first. Even when quick wickets fall, teams want to make the most of the powerplay by sending their top order batsmen.

With batting positions ranging from 6 to 9, this rule will lessen the use of Indian all-rounders who bowl 2-3 overs. These players will now be required to perform the same tasks in which they are experts, which will reduce their general aptitude. This group includes athletes like Washington Sundar, Rahul Tewatia, Deepak Chahar, Rahul Chahar, and Shreyas Gopal.
