The United States and other Western nations, such as the European Union, have been approaching the TikTok app with growing vigour.
In order to prevent a nationwide ban, TikTok said on Wednesday that US officials had advised the well-known video-sharing app to sever ties with its Chinese parent company ByteDance.
Western nations, like the European Union and the United States, have been approaching the app with growing vigour because to concerns that Chinese authorities could utilise or abuse user data.

While neither option addresses the larger industry problems of data access and transfer, proposals for a ban or divestiture are useless if defending national security is the goal, a TikTok spokeswoman told AFP.
“We remain persuaded that the best course of action to address concerns about national security is transparent, US-based protection of US user data and systems, with comprehensive third-party monitoring, vetting, and verification,” the statement reads. On Wednesday, according to The Wall Street Journal and other American news organisations, the White House issued an ultimatum: TikTok must leave ByteDance or it would be prohibited in the US.
The entire situation is a high stakes poker game, according to Wedbush analyst Dan Ives in a note to investors.
The pressure from Washington is “obviously… increasing on ByteDance to strategically sell this crucial asset in a dramatic move that might have enormous ripple effects,” he added.A bill that would enable President Joe Biden to outlaw TikTok was hailed by the White House last week after it was filed in the US Senate.
The bipartisan bill “would allow the United States government to prevent certain foreign governments from utilising technology services… in a way that poses threats to Americans’ sensitive data and our national security,” Biden’s national security advisor, Jake Sullivan, said in a statement.
The White House quickly backed the bill once it was introduced, which increased the political pressure against TikTok, which is also the subject of another piece of legislation in the US House of Representatives.
One of the few subjects that has the possibility for bipartisan support in both the Senate, where Biden’s Democratic Party holds the majority, and the Republican-controlled House of Representatives.
Earlier this year, after a Chinese balloon that Washington claimed was on a spy mission sailed over US territory, anxiety increased among American officials.
Utilize Rocketing on TikTok
In the United States, where it has established itself as a cultural force, particularly among young people, TikTok asserts that it has more than a billion users globally, including more than 100 million.
A ban, according to activists, would be an assault on free speech and prevent TikTok members from throughout the world from absorbing American culture and values. In January, TikTok was prohibited from being installed on devices used by US federal employees.
Also prohibited from installing the software on their company-issued cellphones are civil servants in the European Union and Canada.
According to the Journal article, the US interagency council entrusted with determining the risks foreign investments pose to national security issued the ultimatum to TikTok.
Officials from the US chose not to comment on the report.TikTok has often insisted that it does not share user information with Chinese authorities and claims to have been collaborating with US authorities for more than two years to address national security issues.
According to market researcher Insider Intelligence, users now spend more time on TikTok than they do on YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter. It is also catching up to Netflix, the leader in streaming television.
