Review and Story; In the English-language film Wonder Women, written and directed by Anjali Menon, six pregnant women from various backgrounds and with various personalities enrol in a prenatal class and work through their worries and concerns without making a big deal out of it. At once lighthearted and perceptive, it feeds on restraint and the power it exerts over its strategically placed dramatic explosions.

Wonder Women, airing on SonyLIV, is mostly about a group of women discussing pregnancy and seeking a means to avoid letting their own anxieties or their partners’ expectations spoil the process. It is bolstered by excellent performances from a variety of brilliantly suited performers. However, it isn’t just about future mothers. A well-judged societal critique is also included in the play. The storyline also includes a well-balanced remark on the social and psychological implications of childbearing. That gives the movie a new dimension.

The little time the six women spend in a centre not only helps them get ready for childbirth, but it also changes (or strengthens) how they view their rights as individuals and as women. Wonder Women is never didactic or prescriptive; rather, it is about diverse people finding relief from their concerns and happiness.

Wonder Women, a film produced by Ronnie Screwvala’s RSVP and Ashi Dua Sara’s Flying Unicorn Entertainment, contains a variety of insightful reactions to the emotional, psychological, and physical effects of pregnancy in its brief 80 minute running time. Each participant in the meetings has her own set of issues, but as they move forward and open up to one another, they discover areas of overlap.

The writing of the characters is excellent. Even the characters who appear to be relatively underdeveloped in terms of detail—inevitable in a movie this condensed and succinct—do not disappear from the narrative.

Parvathy Thiruvothu and Nithya Menen, two of the cast’s prominent players, have previously collaborated with the director and achieved similarly outstanding outcomes. The pair is at the top of its game, giving Wonder Women life by developing two temperamentally different women who drive a significant portion of the story.

Amruta Subhash, who plays a Marathi woman from a small town who is slightly older and more vulnerable than the others in the group, adds depth to a movie whose acting calibre is already impressively high thanks to the presence of veteran actors Padmapriya and Nadhiya Moidu (who is excellent as the pregnant woman seeking the former’s advice) and Nadhiya Moidu.

Archana Padmini and Sayanora Philip round out the cast, and both hold their own in a vivid assortment of experiences that add up to a feel-good drama (the playback singer makes her acting debut here). What is particularly noteworthy is that Wonder Women does not have to use clumsy tactics or exert excessive effort in order to accomplish its stated goal.
