Himanta Sarma claimed that Rahul Gandhi “denounced him publicly” and “tore” a copy of the ordinance when Manmohan Singh, the then-prime minister, attempted to introduce the amendment.

Himanta Biswa Sarma, the chief minister of Assam, accused Congressman Rahul Gandhi on Friday of being a “morally corrupt politician,” recalling his opposition to a 2013 bill amendment that would have allowed a convicted MP to continue serving in parliament.

Himanta Sarma claimed that Rahul Gandhi “denounced him publicly” and “tore” a copy of the ordinance when Manmohan Singh, the then-prime minister, attempted to introduce the amendment.

He is leading Kharge to protest against his own stance, which he had taken in 2013, rather than developing a backbone. Rahul Gandhi is the most morally corrupt politician I have ever seen in this country, said Himanta Sarma to reporters outside of a programme.

The chief minister said Rahul Gandhi should inform the populace that he supports the idea that an MP or MLA who has been convicted of a crime should be immediately removed from office.

The former Congress president was recently found guilty in a defamation case by a Surat court, and as a result, he was stripped of his right to serve in the Lok Sabha.
