Imran Khan

Imran Khan was arrested when a video surfaced showing a crowd of paramilitary soldiers encircling him and escorting him to an armoured car.

Imran Khan, the former prime minister of Pakistan, was detained today as he was entering the Islamabad High Court for a hearing in one of the numerous lawsuits that have been pending against him since his resignation last year. Paramilitary forces arrested the former cricketer-turned-politician, 70, after they removed him from the court grounds.

Leaders of his party, Pakistan-Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), claim that police broke into the court, broke the class window of the room where his biometric data was being taken, and then dragged the man outside. The arrest occurs a day after the nation’s strong army accused Imran Khan of making unfounded accusations against a key member of the ISI espionage agency.

Imran Khan was detained in connection with the Qadir Trust issue, which involves charges that the PTI chairman and his wife’s Al-Qadir Trust received a land allocation from Bahria Town for 530 million rupees. The Islamabad Police tweeted in Urdu that the situation is “normal” and that Imran Khan was taken into custody. However, many have questioned whether the arrest was based solely on the merits of the case due to the dramatic way in which it was made.

As PTI urged supporters to demonstrate in the streets, Islamabad police issued a warning that “Section 144 is in force and action will be taken in case of violation.”

In spite of receiving many notices, Imran Khan failed to appear in court, according to a tweet from Pakistan’s interior minister Rana Sanaullah. “The public Accountability Bureau conducted the arrest for creating losses to the public treasury. He was not subjected to any violence, he tweeted in Urdu.

In a video tweeted by his party hours before departing for court, Imran Khan strengthened his accusations against top ISI commander Major-General Faisal Naseer, whom he claims was responsible for the murder attempt against him in Wazirabad.

Imran Khan can be heard foreseeing his arrest in a different Instagram video that was posted not long after his detention. “…I’ll already be in jail in an illegal case when these words get to you. You should all know at this point that democracy, the rule of law, and fundamental rights are no longer valid. I might not have another opportunity to speak with you.I want to talk about two or three things because of it,” he had stated in the video that had been shared on Mr. Khan’s official Instagram account.

He had previously asserted that Major Naseer was responsible for the gruesome killing of veteran journalist Arshad Sharif.

“Major-General Faisal Naseer of Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) attempted to murder me twice. He was also complicit in Arshad Sharif’s murder, a TV anchor. He also stripped Senator Azam Swati of my party of his clothes and severely tortured him, Imran Khan, the leader of Pakistan-Tehreek-e-Insaf, claimed at a rally in Lahore on May 7 while standing in the driver’s seat of a car that could withstand a bomb.

Arshad Sharif, a critic of the Army, was assassinated in Kenya in October as he attempted to leave the country after receiving threats from the government’s security services.

The former Pakistani prime minister has lately avoided arrest multiple times, including a daring run away from a police raid at his home in Lahore’s Zaman Park.

The Islamabad Police Chief, the Secretary of the Interior Ministry, and the Additional Attorney General were ordered to appear before the Islamabad High Court within 15 minutes, according to the Dawn daily.

Dawn added that the IHC CJ expressed “restraint” and threatened to “summon” the prime minister if the Islamabad police chief failed to attend in court.

Justice Farooq said, “Come to court and tell us why Imran has been arrested and in which case,” according to a Pakistani publication.

Fawad Chaudhry, a close friend of Imran Khan and the leader of his party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), had earlier asserted that Rangers were occupying the Islamabad High Court and torturing attorneys there. He tweeted in Urdu, “Imran Khan’s car has been surrounded.”
