NASA has revealed the identities of the four astronauts who will return humans to the Moon. For the first time, a female astronaut, Christina Koch, and a black astronaut, Victor Glover, took to the skies.

First Black Man and Woman Selected by NASA for Moon Mission

The names of the four astronauts who will be returning humans to the moon on the Artemis II Mission have been revealed by NASA after a 50-year hiatus. Victor Glover, a black astronaut, and Christina Koch, a woman astronaut, will both be on a lunar mission for the first time. In late 2022 or early 2025, the group will orbit the Moon in a capsule with Reid Wiseman and Jeremy Hansen. Although they won’t touch down on the Moon, their mission will pave the way for a later crew to do so.

Apollo 17 made the first lunar landing in December 1972, and Apollo 11 carried out the most recent human spaceflight mission. Artemis-3, the following lunar landing, is not anticipated to take place for at least a year after Artemis-2. Elon Musk’s SpaceX company is developing a system that will enable astronauts to descend to the lunar surface, but NASA currently lacks such a system.

The four astronauts, three from the US and one from Canada, were formally introduced to the public at a ceremony held in Houston, Texas. They will now start a demanding period of training to get ready for the mission. NASA is upholding its commitment to promoting diversity in its exploration efforts by choosing a woman and a person of colour. It’s important to note that white men have only ever flown crewed missions to the Moon.

About all Four astronauts.

US Navy pilot Reid Wiseman (age 47) was previously in charge of NASA’s astronaut office. He has flown in space once before, in 2015, to the International Space Station.

Test pilot for the US Navy, Victor Glover (46). In 2020, he made his first space flight after joining NASA in 2013. He was the first African American to spend a full six months on the space station.

Electrical engineer Christina Koch (age 44). She currently holds the record for the most consecutive days spent in space by a woman, at 328. In October 2019, she took part in the first all-female spacewalk with NASA astronaut Jessica Meir.

(47), Jeremy Hansen He was a fighter pilot with the Royal Canadian Air Force before joining the Canadian Space Agency. He hasn’t ventured into space yet.

For the Artemis II mission, which will fly by Earth’s only natural satellite, the crew will board the Orion spacecraft, which will be propelled by the Space Launch System (SLS) rocket, the most powerful vehicle ever created. The Artemis II crew is a symbol of the tens of thousands of people who are working nonstop to take us to the stars. This group of people makes up their, our, and the entire human race’s crew.

NASA will put the SLS rocket, the Orion spacecraft, and the ground systems required to support crewed missions to the Moon to the test during the Artemis II mission. The navigation and communication systems that will be used on subsequent crewed missions will also be tested during this mission.
