JP Nadda, the Union health minister and national president of the Bharatiya Janata Party, was designated as the leader of the house in the Rajya Sabha on Monday. He succeeded fellow party member Piyush Goyal, who was sworn in as a member of the Lok Sabha after winning the Mumbai North seat in the recently held general elections.
On July 5, 2010, Goyal was elected to the Rajya Sabha, and on July 14, 2021, he was named Leader of the House.
Role of the Leader of the House in Rajya Sabha
-The Rajya Sabha’s official business schedule is created in large part by the Leader of the House.
-Maintaining coordination between all House sections to ensure a peaceful and productive debate is the Leader of the House’s principal duty. The Leader of the House has regular communication with both the Opposition parties and members of the Government for this reason.
-Since they frequently have the last say in determining which proposals sponsored by private members will be supported by the government and whether a matter should be put to a free vote, the Leader of the House has a significant influence over the direction and content of legislation.
-An influential member of parliament, the Leader of the House directly influences the direction of government policies and initiatives in the Rajya Sabha.
-The Business Advisory Committee, which chooses how much time to allot for government bills and other business, sometimes includes the Leader of the House. The Leader is welcome to attend BAC meetings even if they are not a member.
