Promoting Hypocrisy”: FIR Against Bareilly Teacher for Kawad Poem Sparks Outrage, Says – ‘Time for Intellectuals to Speak Up
Contents
UP, July16,2025
Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh:
A teacher in Bareilly has landed in serious trouble after reciting a poem about the ongoing Kawad Yatra. The poem, which went viral on social media, triggered strong backlash from Hindu right-wing groups. Following multiple complaints, an FIR was lodged against the teacher, Rajnish Gangwar, who has now responded with sharp criticism of the government, accusing it of encouraging blind faith while ignoring education.
Rajnish, visibly upset, stated:
“The government is promoting superstition. They are shutting down schools but opening liquor shops. Intellectuals must rise and speak out against this fascist mindset.”
What exactly happened?

Rajnish Gangwar, a teacher at a local college in Bareilly, recited a poem during a student gathering that said:
“Don’t go fetching the Kawad, light the lamp of knowledge instead.
Serve humanity and become a true human being.”
In the same poem, he added that “carrying a Kawad doesn’t make you a DM, SP, or any top officer.”
This message, though poetic and metaphorical, didn’t sit well with several right-wing groups, especially since it coincided with the holy month of Sawan, when the Kawad Yatra is in full swing. Accusing him of disrespecting religious sentiments, complaints were filed with the police.
Police Registers Case, Action Begins
Once the complaints poured in, police acted quickly and filed an FIR against Gangwar. Reacting to the developments, he said:
“My poem was written for young students to emphasize the importance of education. What we’re seeing during this yatra are reports of violence and substance abuse. I simply wanted to guide children away from that path and toward learning. I had no wrong intentions.”
“I Never Mentioned Any Religion” – Rajnish Gangwar
Gangwar, who identifies himself as a poet and writer, defended his stand by saying:
“I’ve written and recited poems before. This one too was creative in nature, meant to send a positive message through literature. At no point did I mention any religion.”
He went on to allege that those filing complaints against him were motivated by personal jealousy, not genuine religious hurt.
From Poetry to Politics
What started as a short poem has now sparked a larger debate—one that questions the balance between freedom of expression and religious sensitivity.
The case has become a flashpoint in conversations around education vs ritualism, superstition vs progress, and poetry vs punishment.
As legal proceedings move forward, all eyes are now on how the administration handles the delicate matter of dissent and expression.

How Arab Media Is Covering Nimisha Priya and Her Former Business Partner Talal

Yemen, July17,2025
Efforts to save Indian nurse Nimisha Priya, who was sentenced to death in Yemen, are still underway, but no breakthrough has been achieved yet. On 16th July, Nimisha was scheduled to be executed by firing squad. However, the execution was postponed at the last moment.
Nimisha was convicted in 2020 for the 2017 murder of her Yemeni business partner, Talal Abdo Mahdi. The two were jointly running a clinic in the Yemeni capital, Sana’a. Talal’s mutilated body parts were later found in a water tank. Since then, the case has drawn attention in Yemeni and broader Arab media.
Arab Media Highlights
The Arabic news outlet Al-Mahrah wrote in its report:
“According to Yemen’s Islamic law, Nimisha Priya can only be pardoned if the victim’s family agrees to forgive her.”
The report adds that several important religious scholars are also involved in the efforts to save Nimisha. Among them is Sheikh Habib Umar bin Hafiz, a prominent Sufi scholar from Yemen. The Indian government is also trying through diplomatic channels, but due to poor relations with the Houthi regime, the efforts have seen little success.
Another outlet, Al-Yemen Al-Ghad, stated:
“The Nimisha Priya case is no longer just a criminal matter. Law, tradition, politics, and religion are all now intertwined. The postponement of her execution has raised hopes.”
The UAE-based Gulf News wrote:
“India faces a major challenge in Nimisha Priya’s case because of its very limited diplomatic presence in Yemen. India does not recognize the Houthi government, which leaves it with few intervention options. India is relying on tribal and religious leaders to help save Nimisha. Last-minute efforts were made through India’s Grand Mufti, and they succeeded in delaying her execution on the scheduled day. However, the danger is far from over.”
Victim’s Family Stands Firm
The Arabic website Al-Quds cited a Facebook post by Abdul Fattah Mahdi, brother of the victim Talal Abdo Mahdi. The post, dated Wednesday, says:
“There is nothing new or surprising in the ongoing mediation efforts. Attempts at mediation have been happening for years. Despite this, our stance remains unchanged. We have made our demands very clear — the criminal must be punished. We want nothing more.”
“Unfortunately, the execution was postponed, which we had not expected. The court is aware that we have refused any settlement. We will continue our efforts until justice is delivered. We will not give in to any pressure. Blood cannot be bartered. Justice may take time, but we will not compromise.”
Abdul Fattah also refuted some claims circulating in Indian media, saying:
“There are reports suggesting that Talal had seized Nimisha’s passport and exploited her — but these are entirely false. Nimisha never made such allegations during any court hearing, and neither did her legal team ever claim this.”

Odisha Shutdown Over Student’s Death: Opposition Protest Brings State to Standstill

Contents
Odisha,July17,2025
Odisha witnessed a statewide shutdown on Thursday as eight opposition parties, including the Congress, called for a bandh from 6 AM to 6 PM in protest over the death of a female student from Balasore’s FM College.
The shutdown was triggered by growing outrage over the student’s tragic death, which followed her alleged sexual harassment and lack of action by authorities.
Impact Across the State
The bandh had a significant impact across Odisha, with schools, colleges, markets, shopping malls, and cinema halls all remaining closed. Public transport services were hit, and nearly 30,000 petrol pumps also shut down in solidarity.
However, emergency services, including ambulance operations, hospitals, and medical stores, continued to function normally.
Congress Appeals for Peaceful Protest
Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee President Bhakta Charan Das released a video message urging people to participate in the bandh peacefully and maintain public order.

Government Response
In anticipation of the bandh, heavy police deployment was made across key locations, including the State Secretariat, the Odisha Legislative Assembly, and major government buildings. District Collectors were placed on high alert and instructed to ensure that essential services were not disrupted.
Commissioner of Police S. Debadatta Singh emphasized that while political parties have the right to protest, any unlawful activity would invite strict legal action.
What Are the Protesters Demanding?
The Congress and other opposition parties have demanded a judicial inquiry into the student’s death. They are also calling for the resignation of Odisha’s Higher Education Minister Surjya Narayan Patro, Balasore MP Pratap Sarangi, and local MLA Manas Kumar Dutta.
Additionally, they are seeking immediate suspension of Balasore District Collector Surya Vamsi Mayur Vikas and SP Raj Prasad, holding them accountable for administrative failure.
Opposition leaders have slammed the BJD government, accusing it of allowing law and order to deteriorate in the state and putting the lives of citizens at risk.
What’s the Case About?
The deceased was a student at Fakir Mohan College in Balasore and had recently been admitted in critical condition to AIIMS Bhubaneswar after attempting self-immolation on Saturday. She later succumbed to her injuries.
According to her family, the student had been a victim of ongoing sexual harassment by a department head at her college. Despite repeated complaints, they allege that the college administration failed to take action, pushing her to take this extreme step.
Following public outcry, the college principal Dilip Kumar Ghosh was arrested on Monday. The accused department head, Sameer Sahu, has also been taken into custody.
The incident has sparked widespread outrage across Odisha and raised urgent questions about campus safety, accountability, and administrative apathy.

According to news agency PTI, the raids were conducted as part of an ongoing investigation into a racket involved in forced religious conversions. As per IANS, the ED raided as many as 14 different premises across various locations.
Earlier, the Uttar Pradesh Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) had arrested Changur Baba, accusing him of operating a religious conversion network.
Who is Changur Baba?
Changur Baba hails from Rehra Mafi village in the Utraula tehsil of Balrampur district in Uttar Pradesh. Born in the same village, his early life was marked by modest beginnings.
Locals recall that he used to sell imitation jewelry like rings and gemstones on a bicycle. After spending several years doing this work, he eventually moved to Mumbai, where he later declared himself a pir (spiritual leader).
The case has drawn national attention due to the scale of the alleged conversion racket and the money laundering trail now under ED scrutiny.

Gunfire Inside Patna’s Paras Hospital: Murder Accused Chandan Mishra Shot Dead During Treatment

Contents
Patna, July17,2025
In a shocking breach of security, a group of armed assailants stormed into Paras Hospital — one of the prominent private hospitals in Patna — and gunned down an undertrial prisoner named Chandan Mishra. The hospital is located in the bustling Raja Bazar area of Bihar’s capital.
Who Was the Victim?
Chandan Mishra, a resident of Buxar district, was lodged in Patna’s Beur Jail in connection with the murder of a man named Keshari. He had been temporarily released on parole for medical treatment and was admitted to the hospital when the attack took place.
What Happened?
According to eyewitnesses, chaos erupted around the hospital premises when several gunshots were heard. Amit Kumar, who was present at the hospital with a family member, described the scene:
“We were standing outside when we saw a few people rush in. Moments later, we heard a commotion and then gunfire. People started running in panic. Police and media personnel arrived shortly after.”
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Karthikeyan Sharma, who reached the scene, stated that multiple rounds were fired.
“It appears the attack was carried out by a rival group. The number of bullets will be confirmed through the post-mortem, but it’s evident that several shots were fired inside the hospital premises.”
Political Reactions and Law & Order Concerns
The incident has reignited concerns over Bihar’s deteriorating law and order situation. Former Deputy Chief Minister and RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav took to social media platform X, writing:
“Government-backed criminals shot a patient inside the ICU. Is anyone safe in Bihar anymore? Wasn’t this the state of affairs before 2005 too?”
This isn’t an isolated case. Just days earlier, well-known Patna businessman Gopal Khemka was shot dead right outside his residence near Gandhi Maidan, further fuelling public fear and political outrage.
The Bigger Picture
Attacks like these — especially in places meant to be sanctuaries of safety and healing, like hospitals — paint a grim picture of rising lawlessness. With increasing frequency of high-profile crimes, the spotlight is now firmly on the state administration’s ability to maintain order and instill public confidence.
The police investigation is underway, but the brazenness of the attack raises a troubling question: If a prisoner isn’t safe inside a hospital, who really is?

India Denies Entry to U.S. ‘Non-Veg Milk’ Over Cultural Concerns Amid Ongoing Trade Talks

Contents
New Delhi, July 16,2025
The Indian government has refused to allow the import of U.S. dairy products containing ‘non-veg milk’, citing deep-rooted cultural sensitivities. This decision comes as part of ongoing trade negotiations between India and the United States.
While the U.S. continues to push for greater access to Indian markets for its agricultural and dairy products, India has made it clear that it will not compromise on the protection of its farm and dairy sectors. The term ‘non-veg milk’ refers to dairy sourced from animals fed with non-vegetarian feed — something that contradicts the vegetarian ethos followed by a significant portion of India’s population.
The last date set by the U.S. administration under President Donald Trump for imposing tariffs was earlier July 9, but this has now been extended to August 1, allowing more time for both countries to reach a trade agreement. Hopes are high for an interim trade deal that may soon be announced, potentially paving the way for bilateral trade to hit the ambitious $500 billion mark by 2030.
Despite the momentum, India’s firm stance on cultural and agricultural safeguards remains a key point of contention in the negotiations.
