During a ceremony, President Draupadi Murmu gave the posthumous Tenzing Norgay National Adventure Award to Savita Kanswal, a heroic mountaineer from Lothru village in Uttarkashi district
Savita Kanswal received the coveted Tenzing Norgay National Adventure medal posthumously from President Draupadi Murmu in a poignant event. Her father, Radheshyam Kanswal, also received the medal, which is a testimonial to Savita’s extraordinary accomplishments in the world of climbing.
An Amazing Achievement
In an incredible 16 days, Savita Kanswal became the first female mountaineer from India to ascend both Mount Makalu (8485 m) and Everest (8848 m). This incredible accomplishment demonstrated not only her physical strength but also her unwavering will to succeed at such a young age—25.
Misfortune Occurs
Savita’s bright future took a devastating turn on October 4, 2022, when she passed away suddenly. Savita was hit by an avalanche while she was part of the team dispatched by the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering to climb Draupadi Ka Danda peak. Her life was finally lost as a result of her love for scaling mountains and testing boundaries.
