Nepal Floods: 84 Indians Rescued, About 290 Uncontactable as Toll Reaches 469

Kathmandu | 28 Aug 2026

At least 84 Indian nationals have been rescued after catastrophic Nepal floods devastated the Bhote Koshi–Trishuli river basin, while about 290 Indians remained uncontactable in the latest Indian government updates. Nepal Police said on Friday that the death toll had risen to 469 as search teams continued operations across flood-hit districts and authorities monitored the risk of further flooding from the Tibet side.

84 Indians rescued as authorities trace stranded pilgrims and workers

India’s Ministry of External Affairs said 63 Indian nationals working at the Trishuli-I hydropower project had been rescued. They joined 21 people from Tamil Nadu, who were travelling for the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra and were rescued earlier, taking the confirmed number of rescued Indians to 84.

The number of Indians still out of contact has been changing as communications are restored and rescue teams verify the whereabouts of different groups. The MEA initially put the figure at 288 on Thursday and subsequent updates and reports citing the ministry placed it at about 290.

Officials have stressed that “uncontactable” does not necessarily mean confirmed missing or dead. Communications and road links were severely disrupted across the disaster zone, complicating efforts to establish the location of travellers and workers.

Around 200 other Indian nationals on the Tibet side, many associated with the Kailash Mansarovar pilgrimage, have also sought assistance for evacuation. Indian authorities are coordinating with officials in Nepal and China.

Nepal flood death toll rises to 469

Nepal Police said on Friday that 469 bodies had been recovered following the devastating flash flood. It also reported that 1,545 people had been rescued from affected areas.

Nepal’s National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority had listed 977 people as missing or out of contact in its latest status report available from Thursday. The figures remain subject to revision as bodies are identified, survivors are located and information arrives from areas where communication systems were damaged.

Thousands of security personnel have been deployed in search-and-rescue operations, while helicopters, drones and ground teams are being used to reach isolated settlements and search riverbanks and debris fields.

Flood surged into Nepal from Tibet after Himalayan collapse

The disaster struck on 26 August when a massive surge entered Nepal from the Tibet side and moved through the Bhote Koshi river system into the Trishuli, devastating areas including Timure, Syaphrubesi and Rasuwagadhi before causing destruction farther downstream.

Preliminary assessments by Nepali authorities and geological analysis indicate that an ice-and-rock or glacial collapse generated a major debris flow and flood. Early reports had raised the possibility of an earthquake, but subsequent analysis indicated that the seismic signal was associated with the collapse rather than being the primary cause of the disaster.

The flood destroyed critical infrastructure. Nepal’s Department of Roads said the 42-kilometre road between Betrawati and the Rasuwagadhi border was damaged at multiple locations, with several bridges also swept away.

New barrier lake keeps downstream areas on alert

Authorities have also warned of a continuing risk from a barrier lake formed upstream on the Tibetan side. Nepal’s hydrological authorities said they had received information from China about the development and advised people along the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli river corridors to remain away from riverbanks and follow official warnings.

The possibility of another sudden release of water has added urgency to rescue work in areas already cut off by collapsed roads, destroyed bridges and heavy deposits of mud and debris.

India sends 47.5 tonnes of emergency assistance to Nepal

India has sent 47.5 tonnes of humanitarian and disaster-relief supplies to Nepal aboard two military transport aircraft. The assistance includes temporary shelters, tents, blankets, hygiene kits, solar lamps, dewatering pumps, generators, medicines and food supplies.

The MEA has also said India is mobilising Bailey bridges to support relief and connectivity requirements if requested by Nepal. Indian and Nepali authorities remain in contact over rescue operations and assistance for affected nationals.

Indian Embassy issues emergency helplines

The Embassy of India in Kathmandu has asked Indian nationals affected by the flash floods or their families seeking information to contact its emergency numbers: +977 985 131 6807, +977 970 910 7500 and +977 981 032 6117. The embassy says the numbers can also be contacted through WhatsApp.

Search, rescue and identification operations remain under way, and casualty and missing-person figures are expected to change as authorities receive verified information from the affected region.

HAF Issues Security Alert After Mamdani Opposes Mohan Bhagwat’s New York Event

New York | 27 Aug 2026

The Hindu American Foundation has issued a security advisory ahead of RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat’s 29 August appearance in New York, urging attendees to remain vigilant and calling on Mayor Zohran Mamdani to protect their safety and civil rights after he publicly opposed the event.

HAF Security Alert Urges Vigilance and Restraint

The Hindu American Foundation said it issued the community advisory before the Universal Oneness Celebration at the Infosys Theater at Madison Square Garden. Bhagwat is scheduled to address the gathering on Saturday.

“Stay vigilant, remain situationally aware, and keep interactions civil.”— Hindu American Foundation

HAF advised attendees to respect the rights of others to assemble, protest and express their views. It asked people to report suspicious activity to security personnel or law enforcement, leave the area if they felt threatened and avoid confrontations with anyone making provocative or threatening statements.

The organisation alleged that activists targeting Hindu Americans had attempted to disrupt or cancel the celebration. Its public advisory did not identify a specific imminent threat.

HAF also urged Mamdani to uphold his responsibility to protect all New Yorkers, including those attending the programme, and guarantee their safety and civil rights.

Mamdani Opposes Mohan Bhagwat’s New York Event

Mamdani said he did not support the gathering but acknowledged that New York City might not have the authority to prevent a private event from proceeding.

“I don’t support the rally, but I don’t know if the city has any jurisdiction on cancelling a private event.”— Zohran Mamdani, Mayor of New York City

The mayor said his understanding of India was rooted in a pluralistic and secular republic where every person belonged. He expressed concern about what he described as the rise of an exclusionary political vision.

No cancellation of the event had been announced as of 27 August, and the programme remained scheduled for 29 August.

Protests Planned Outside Madison Square Garden

Hindus for Human Rights and other organisations opposing Bhagwat’s participation have announced demonstrations outside Madison Square Garden on the day of the event. The Indian American Muslim Council and the Interfaith Center of New York are among the groups that have criticised the planned appearance.

American Hindus for Engagement and Dialogue, the event’s organiser, describes the Universal Oneness Celebration as a gathering promoting shared heritage, interfaith engagement and unity among Hindu Americans and other communities.

The RSS has said the programme will involve a diverse, multicultural and multi-faith audience. The organisation rejects allegations that it promotes intolerance and describes itself as a Hindu-centred cultural and civilisational movement.

US Panel Adds Pressure During Bhagwat’s Visit

The controversy has intensified during Bhagwat’s US visit after the US Commission on International Religious Freedom recommended targeted sanctions against RSS members and Indian officials it accused of involvement in religious-freedom violations. The commission also called for Bhagwat’s US visa to be revoked.

USCIRF is a bipartisan government body, but its policy recommendations are not binding. The United States government had not announced sanctions in response to the latest recommendation.

India’s Ministry of External Affairs has rejected USCIRF’s assertions, describing the commission as biased and lacking credibility. The Indian government denies discriminating against religious minorities and maintains that its welfare policies benefit citizens across communities.

Zohran Mamdani Opposes Mohan Bhagwat’s New York Event, Sparking Political Row

New York | 26 Aug 2026

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has opposed an August 29 event featuring Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh chief Mohan Bhagwat at Madison Square Garden, triggering divided reactions from Indian political leaders and civil rights organisations.

Mamdani opposes Mohan Bhagwat’s New York event

Mamdani said he did not support the private gathering but acknowledged that the New York City administration might not have the authority to prevent it from taking place.

“I don’t support the rally, but I don’t know if the city has any jurisdiction on cancelling a private event.”— Zohran Mamdani, Mayor of New York City

Mamdani, New York City’s first Muslim and Indian-American mayor, said his family had taught him to view India as a pluralistic and secular republic in which every citizen belonged equally. He described movements based on what he called an exclusionary vision as troubling and said they conflicted with New York’s commitment to diversity.

His comments did not amount to an order cancelling the programme, and no cancellation had been announced as of August 26.

Universal Oneness Celebration scheduled for August 29

Bhagwat is scheduled to deliver the keynote address at the Universal Oneness Celebration on August 29. The programme is being organised by the AHEAD Forum, formally known as American Hindus for Engagement and Dialogue.

Organisers describe the gathering as an initiative promoting shared heritage, interfaith harmony and the principle of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam, meaning “the world is one family”. The AHEAD Forum said more than 200 Hindu American organisations were supporting the programme.

The event coincides with Raksha Bandhan and is part of the RSS’s centenary-year international outreach. Bhagwat’s overseas itinerary also includes visits to Canada and the United Kingdom.

Indian political leaders divided over Mamdani’s position

Mamdani’s opposition prompted contrasting responses from Indian political parties. BJP leaders Syed Zafar Islam and Bhola Singh criticised his position and defended the RSS as an organisation involved in social service and nation-building.

Shiv Sena spokesperson Shaina NC accused Mamdani of appeasement politics and questioned what she described as double standards towards the RSS and organisations associated with its community work.

Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Anand Dubey also called the opposition unwarranted. Although acknowledging his party’s political differences with the RSS, Dubey argued that those disagreements should not result in opposition to an Indian leader visiting another country.

Congress MP Imran Masood questioned the purpose of the programme and the message its organisers intended to convey internationally. Trinamool Congress MP Saugata Roy, meanwhile, said opposition to the event was understandable in a religiously diverse city such as New York.

Interfaith and civil rights groups seek cancellation

Several interfaith, civil rights and community organisations have urged Madison Square Garden to cancel Bhagwat’s appearance. Groups involved in the opposition include Hindus for Human Rights, the Indian American Muslim Council and the Interfaith Center of New York.

The organisations have raised objections to the RSS’s ideology and record. The RSS rejects allegations of intolerance and describes itself as a Hindu-centred cultural and civilisational movement focused on social organisation and national development.

The AHEAD Forum has maintained that the programme is intended to promote mutual respect, unity and dialogue across communities. With Mamdani questioning the city’s jurisdiction over a privately organised indoor event, any decision affecting the booking would rest with the venue or organisers unless a valid legal or public-safety ground emerged.

Rasuwa Flood Leaves 28 Security Personnel Unreachable as Nepal Mounts Rescue

Rasuwa | 26 Aug 2026

A sudden Rasuwa flood left 28 security personnel out of contact on Wednesday after the Bhote Koshi River surged through Timure and Syabrubesi, damaging settlements, police posts and power infrastructure and triggering downstream warnings across five Nepalese districts.

Search begins for 28 security personnel

The personnel include 19 members of Nepal Police and nine from the Armed Police Force, according to information presented at an emergency meeting of Nepal’s National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council.

Thirteen of the 22 officers assigned to the Rasuwagadhi Police Post remained unreachable, while six of nine officers stationed in Syabrubesi were also out of contact. Nine Armed Police Force personnel deployed at the Timure Border Outpost had not established contact.

The flood struck at about 9 am after water entered the Bhote Koshi from the Tibetan side of the Nepal–China border. Officials were still assessing the overall casualty toll and the full scale of the destruction.

Rasuwa flood alert extends downstream

Authorities placed communities along the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli rivers on high alert in Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Dhading, Gorkha and Chitwan. Residents near riverbanks, markets and other vulnerable areas were instructed to move to safer ground.

The government advised people to avoid the Prithvi Highway, the Galchhi–Nuwakot–Rasuwa–Syabrubesi road and the Mugling–Narayangadh corridor while emergency operations continued.

Floodwater entered Nuwakot District Prison, but its inmates were transferred to a safe location. The water level there later began receding, according to the prison administration.

Homes and power infrastructure damaged

Preliminary assessments indicated that approximately 60 houses near Trishuli Bazaar in Nuwakot were swept away. Two concrete bridges across the Trishuli River were also destroyed. No deaths had been reported in Nuwakot at the time of the district administration’s initial assessment.

The Nepal Electricity Authority reported damage to six major power facilities: Rasuwagadhi, Chilime, Trishuli 3A, the Trishuli 3B Hub 220-kilovolt substation, Trishuli Hydropower Station and Devighat Hydropower Station. Electricity distribution infrastructure was also affected.

Markets, houses, hotels and vehicles were reported damaged in Timure and Syabrubesi. Three Nepal Police offices—the Timure Area Police Office, Syabrubesi Police Post and Rasuwagadhi Police Post—also sustained damage.

Flood cause and rescue response

The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology said rainfall was not considered the cause of the flood. Senior meteorologist Meen Kumar Aryal said rainfall in parts of Rasuwa had not exceeded seven millimetres during the preceding 24 hours.

Officials were investigating whether a glacial lake outburst or another upstream event caused the sudden surge. No definitive cause had been established.

Prime Minister Balendra Shah ordered intensified search, rescue and relief operations. The Nepali Army, Nepal Police, Armed Police Force and district authorities mobilised personnel, while two military helicopters and medical teams were deployed to the affected region.

The government also convened emergency disaster-management and Cabinet meetings to coordinate evacuations, relief supplies and the search for those who remained unreachable.

Trump Considers Renaming Lake Ontario ‘Lake America’ as Canada Trade Dispute Escalates

Washington | 25 Aug 2026

US President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that his administration was considering renaming Lake Ontario “Lake America”, linking the proposal to the escalating trade dispute between the United States and Canada. No formal name-change measure was announced.

  • Trump’s Lake Ontario Proposal Remains Informal
  • Canada Declines to Engage With Renaming Remark
  • Tariffs Deepen US-Canada Trade Dispute
  • Lake Ontario Is a Shared Boundary Water

Trump’s Lake Ontario Proposal Remains Informal

Trump raised the possible change in a post on Truth Social, saying the United States expected to conduct substantially less business with Ontario. He later shared an altered map showing the existing name crossed out and “Lake America” displayed in its place.

“The United States is giving serious consideration to changing the name of Lake Ontario to Lake America.”— Donald Trump, President of the United States

The post did not specify whether the administration would issue an executive order or pursue another formal process. Trump previously directed US federal agencies to use “Gulf of America” for the Gulf of Mexico through an executive order signed in January 2025.

Canada Declines to Engage With Renaming Remark

Dominic LeBlanc, Canada’s minister responsible for US trade, said the federal government would not respond to daily social-media statements from Trump or members of his administration.

The Canadian government did not indicate that it would recognise any alternative name for the lake. Trump’s proposal would not by itself determine how Canadian authorities, international organisations or institutions outside the United States identify the waterway.

Tariffs Deepen US-Canada Trade Dispute

The remarks came after bilateral trade negotiations broke down and Washington imposed tariffs of 50 per cent on Canadian goods valued at C$27.6 billion, effective from 22 August.

Canada subsequently announced matching counter-tariffs on C$27.6 billion of US products from 8 September. The measures cover sectors including steel and aluminium, dairy products, appliances, agricultural equipment, pulp and paper, plastics and electronics. Existing Canadian counter-tariffs on US vehicles will remain in force.

Trump has also threatened tariffs of 50 per cent on Canadian vehicles, automotive components and steel. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has accused Washington of seeking concessions that would damage Canada’s automotive, steel and aluminium industries.

Lake Ontario Is a Shared Boundary Water

Lake Ontario is one of North America’s five Great Lakes. It lies between the Canadian province of Ontario and the US state of New York and forms part of the international boundary between the two countries.

Canada and the United States cooperate on shared waters through arrangements including the 1909 Boundary Waters Treaty and the International Joint Commission. Trump’s post did not explain how the proposed name would apply to the lake’s binational status or existing cross-border institutions.

Northern Cyprus Seeks IVF Patients After Donor Concerns Affect 30 Children

Northern Cyprus Seeks IVF Patients After Donor Concerns Affect 30 Children

Northern Cyprus | 22 Aug 2026

Turkish Cypriot health authorities have asked fertility patients with donor-related concerns to come forward after an investigation raised fears that at least 30 children, most of them British, may have been conceived using sperm or eggs from donors other than those selected by their parents.

The appeal marks the latest development in the Northern Cyprus IVF donor investigation, which began after families reported discrepancies between donor profiles provided by clinics and genetic ancestry indicated by commercial DNA tests.

Northern Cyprus IVF Donor Investigation Widens

The investigation initially covered seven children but expanded after more families reported similar experiences. Fifteen of the 30 cases have been linked to treatment at the now-closed Dogus IVF Centre.

Parents said they selected anonymous donors using information about medical history, appearance, education, personality and interests. They now question whether the requested genetic material was used during treatment.

Commercial DNA tests have been conducted involving 11 of the children. The reported results indicated ancestry connected to Turkey or neighbouring regions in cases where parents said they had selected Western European donors, strengthening concerns about possible donor substitutions.

Laura Bridgens, founder of Donor Conceived UK, said the allegations raised serious questions about children’s access to accurate information about their biological and medical backgrounds.

“These reports are deeply concerning. It is a fundamental human right of a person conceived by a donor to know the truth about their origins.”

— Laura Bridgens, founder of Donor Conceived UK

Danish Donor Case Raises Traceability Questions

One mother, identified as Rachel, underwent treatment at Dogus in 2012 after selecting an anonymous Danish sperm donor listed by Cryos International under the pseudonym “Ditto”.

Rachel said the treatment package cost approximately €4,000 and that clinic coordinators told her sperm from the selected donor would be ordered. She later became concerned after failing to receive documentation confirming its use.

DNA testing conducted years later indicated that Rachel was the biological mother of her 13-year-old son, Jonah, but that the selected Danish donor was not his biological father. The results instead indicated Turkish and southern European ancestry.

Cryos International subsequently told investigators that it had no record of supplying sperm to Dogus. The company said it had blacklisted the clinic in 2016 following an earlier case involving a suspected failure to order sperm selected by a patient.

Clinic Rejects Allegations and Disputes Timeline

Dr Firdevs Uğuz Tip, who treated several patients at Dogus and later became the responsible physician at Miracle IVF Centre, has denied misleading patients or committing wrongdoing.

Miracle IVF described the reporting concerning the centre and Dr Tip as “incomplete, one-sided and misleading”. It said no patient-specific records or authorised documentation had been presented to establish personal or institutional responsibility.

The centre also stressed that Dogus and Miracle IVF are separate legal entities. It said Dr Tip worked at Dogus as an obstetrician and gynaecologist between 2009 and 2015, while Miracle IVF was licensed and began operating on 18 April 2019.

Miracle IVF said an inspection of the patient files examined by Turkish Cypriot health authorities found no deficiency or breach of legislation. It added that no final official decision had established wrongdoing by the centre or Dr Tip in relation to activities conducted after Miracle opened.

Dr Sevket Alpturk, identified as Dogus’s owner and responsible director, and former patient coordinator Julie Hodson did not respond to questions reported by the BBC. No competent authority has issued a final finding assigning responsibility for the alleged donor discrepancies.

Health Authorities Invite Families to Submit Evidence

Turkish Cypriot health authorities said their investigation remained under way and invited local and international patients to contact them if they suspected that their chosen donor was not used or if DNA results conflicted with information supplied by a clinic.

Officials said submissions would be handled under confidentiality and personal-data rules. The investigation is expected to examine donor traceability, patient consent, medical records and whether other families may have been affected.

The UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office updated its Cyprus travel advice on 14 August 2026, warning that fertility treatment in the north carries risks because clinics are not regulated in the same way as those in Britain.

Northern Cyprus is recognised as an independent state only by Turkey, and European Union law does not apply there. The UK’s Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority has no powers over overseas clinics and advises patients to examine local regulation, donor screening, record-keeping and legal remedies before travelling for treatment.

US Air Force C-17 Lands in Moscow; Flight’s Purpose Remains Unclear

Moscow | 25 Aug 2026

A US Air Force C-17 Globemaster III landed at Moscow’s Vnukovo Airport on Tuesday after flying from Riga, but neither its mission nor details of any passengers or cargo had been publicly confirmed.

  • C-17’s route from Riga to Moscow
  • Kremlin says it has no information
  • Purpose of rare flight remains unconfirmed

US Air Force C-17’s Route from Riga to Moscow

Flight-tracking service Flightradar24 identified the aircraft as a Boeing C-17A Globemaster III with serial number 07-7181 and the call sign RCH4555.

Tracking data showed the aircraft leaving Riga at approximately 8.50 am Moscow time and reaching Vnukovo shortly after 10 am. It had arrived in the Latvian capital on 23 August after departing from the Camp Springs area in Maryland, where Joint Base Andrews is located.

Joint Base Andrews supports US government and senior-official air transport. However, the aircraft’s earlier presence there does not establish that a senior official travelled aboard the Moscow-bound flight.

Kremlin Says It Has No Information About the Aircraft

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters that he had no information about the US military transport aircraft’s arrival, according to Interfax.

“No, I do not have such information.”

— Dmitry Peskov, Kremlin spokesman

Peskov also said that no meeting with representatives of the US administration was scheduled at the Kremlin during the week beginning 24 August.

No public explanation from US authorities about the flight’s purpose, occupants or cargo was available at the time of publication. Reuters said it could not independently establish whether the aircraft was carrying passengers or freight.

Purpose of Rare US Military Flight Remains Unconfirmed

The C-17 is a strategic transport aircraft designed to move troops, equipment and cargo over long distances. It can also support tactical airlift, medical evacuation and humanitarian missions, according to the US Air Force.

The aircraft’s capabilities alone do not indicate the nature of Tuesday’s mission. Claims circulating online about diplomatic talks or the presence of senior US officials had not been supported by official evidence.

Direct US military flights to Russia have been uncommon amid strained relations between Washington and Moscow. Reuters reported that the previous direct flight by a US-registered aircraft from Europe to Russia took place in January, when US envoys Steven Witkoff and Jared Kushner travelled to Moscow for talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin concerning the war in Ukraine.

Until either government releases further information, the reason for the C-17’s arrival at Vnukovo remains undisclosed.

India-US Trade Deal: Trump Says India Benefited for Decades, Yet a Historic Modi Agreement Could Be Near

India-US Trade Deal remains in focus after Donald Trump said India benefited from high tariffs for decades while expressing confidence in a major agreement with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Explore tariffs, trade disputes, agriculture concerns, and what the deal could mean for both economies.

India-US Trade Deal Trump Says India Benefited for Decades

5 June, Credent TV | The India-US Trade Deal has once again become one of the most closely watched developments in global commerce after US President Donald Trump made a series of remarks about trade relations between Washington and New Delhi.

Speaking about bilateral trade, Trump claimed that India had imposed high tariffs on American goods for decades and had benefited significantly from those trade policies. At the same time, he emphasized that the United States is now earning substantial revenue through tariffs and expressed optimism about reaching a major agreement with India in the near future. Trump also highlighted his personal rapport with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, describing him as a good friend and suggesting that strong leadership-level relations could help move negotiations forward.

His comments come at a critical time when officials from both nations are engaged in intensive discussions aimed at advancing the India-US Trade Deal and resolving long-standing trade disputes.

Trump’s Latest Remarks on India-US Trade

The latest debate surrounding the India-US Trade Deal was triggered by Trump’s assertion that India had “taken advantage” of the United States through its tariff policies over many years.

According to Trump, American exporters often faced higher duties while attempting to access the Indian market. He argued that the situation has changed significantly and claimed that the United States is now generating substantial revenue from tariff measures imposed on imports. Despite these criticisms, Trump maintained a positive tone regarding bilateral relations and suggested that a significant trade agreement remains within reach.

His statement reflects a broader strategy that has characterized his trade policy: using tariffs as leverage while simultaneously pursuing negotiations aimed at securing improved market access for American businesses.

Why Trump Says India Benefited from High Tariffs

For years, tariff structures have been one of the most contentious issues between the two countries.

The United States has repeatedly argued that India’s tariff regime has made it difficult for American companies to compete effectively in sectors such as agriculture, medical devices, dairy products, and alcoholic beverages.

India, however, has defended its tariff policies by pointing to the need to protect domestic industries, farmers, and small businesses from overwhelming foreign competition.

Trump’s latest comments are consistent with long-standing American concerns that India’s import duties have historically been higher than those imposed by many developed economies. While trade experts may debate the extent of the advantage, the issue has remained central to every major discussion surrounding the India-US Trade Deal.

India-US Trade Deal Negotiations Gain Momentum

Despite recurring disputes, both governments appear committed to advancing the India-US Trade Deal.

Recent rounds of negotiations in New Delhi have reportedly been constructive, with officials discussing tariff reductions, customs procedures, market access, digital trade, and regulatory cooperation. India’s Commerce Ministry has indicated that discussions have been positive and that both sides are working toward an arrangement that benefits businesses and consumers in both countries.

Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal has also expressed optimism, suggesting that the first phase of the trade agreement could be finalized in the coming weeks if negotiations continue smoothly.

This momentum has raised hopes among exporters, investors, and multinational corporations that the India-US Trade Deal could become a landmark economic partnership.

Proposed 12.5% US Tariff Creates Fresh Challenges

Even as negotiations continue, a significant obstacle has emerged.

The Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR) has proposed an additional tariff of up to 12.5% on imports from India and several other economies. The proposal stems from a Section 301 investigation related to the enforcement of restrictions on goods allegedly linked to forced labor practices.

If implemented, the proposed tariff could increase costs for Indian exporters and reduce the competitiveness of Indian goods in the American market.

The proposal has not yet become law. The USTR is currently seeking public comments before making a final determination. Hearings are expected before any final decision is announced.

For businesses closely monitoring the India-US Trade Deal, this proposed tariff represents a new layer of uncertainty.

Why the Trade Agreement Has Not Been Finalized Yet

Although both sides have made progress, several developments have complicated efforts to conclude the India-US Trade Deal.

Earlier, an interim trade framework had been discussed as a stepping stone toward a broader agreement. However, legal challenges involving certain Trump-era tariff measures created uncertainty about the future structure of American trade policy. These developments slowed the pace of negotiations and raised questions about how future tariffs would be incorporated into any final agreement.

Trade experts note that while political leaders may support an agreement, technical negotiations involving thousands of products, regulations, and compliance standards often require extensive discussion.

India US Trade Deal

Key Disputes in the India-US Trade Deal

Several important issues continue to divide negotiators.

1. Market Access

The United States wants greater access to the Indian market for:

  • Agricultural products
  • Dairy products
  • Medical devices
  • Alcoholic beverages
  • Digital services

India, meanwhile, seeks better access for:

  • Textiles
  • Gems and jewelry
  • Pharmaceuticals
  • Engineering goods
  • Agricultural exports

These competing priorities have made the India-US Trade Deal negotiations particularly complex.

2. Tariff Reductions

India wants the United States to reduce tariffs on several export-oriented sectors.

The United States wants India to lower import barriers that American businesses consider restrictive.

Balancing these demands remains one of the biggest challenges facing negotiators.

Agriculture and Dairy: The Biggest Sticking Points

Agriculture remains perhaps the most sensitive issue in the entire India-US Trade Deal discussion.

Washington has long sought greater access for products such as:

  • Corn
  • Soybeans
  • Apples
  • Almonds
  • Other agricultural commodities

American exporters argue that India’s large consumer market offers enormous opportunities.

India, however, remains cautious.

Policymakers worry that increased imports could adversely affect millions of Indian farmers who already operate on narrow profit margins. Any sudden increase in foreign competition could have significant economic and political consequences.

The dairy sector presents another challenge.

The United States has pushed for broader access to India’s dairy market. However, differences related to production practices, certification standards, and consumer preferences have prevented meaningful breakthroughs so far.

Because agriculture directly affects livelihoods across rural India, negotiators must proceed carefully to ensure that any India-US Trade Deal does not create unintended economic disruptions.

Economic Impact on India and the United States

A successful India-US Trade Deal could generate substantial benefits for both countries.

Benefits for India

  • Increased export opportunities
  • Better access to American consumers
  • Stronger foreign investment flows
  • Enhanced manufacturing competitiveness
  • Growth in pharmaceuticals and engineering exports

Benefits for the United States

  • Greater access to India’s expanding middle class
  • Increased agricultural exports
  • Expanded opportunities for medical device manufacturers
  • Improved access for technology and digital companies
  • Stronger strategic economic ties in the Indo-Pacific region

Economists generally agree that deeper trade integration could support growth, job creation, and innovation in both economies.

However, the exact impact would depend on the final terms of the agreement.

What Happens Next?

The coming weeks may prove crucial for the future of the India-US Trade Deal.

Negotiators are expected to continue discussions on tariff reductions, market access commitments, and regulatory cooperation. Meanwhile, the proposed 12.5% tariff remains under review, with public consultations and hearings scheduled before any final decision is made.

Political observers believe that both governments have strong incentives to reach an agreement. The United States views India as an increasingly important strategic and economic partner, while India seeks stronger trade ties with one of its largest export markets.

The India-US Trade Deal stands at a critical crossroads. Donald Trump’s recent remarks have once again highlighted the long-standing disagreements over tariffs and market access, while also underscoring the possibility of a major breakthrough.

Although challenges remain—including the proposed 12.5% tariff, agricultural disputes, dairy market access, and regulatory differences—both countries continue to engage in active negotiations. Trump’s positive comments about Prime Minister Narendra Modi suggest that political goodwill still exists at the highest levels of government.

If negotiators can bridge the remaining gaps, the India-US Trade Deal could become one of the most important bilateral economic agreements of the decade, strengthening trade, investment, and strategic cooperation between two of the world’s largest democracies.

Social Media Dialogue or Controversy? The Growing Crisis of Communication in the Digital Age

Social Media Dialogue or Controversy is becoming one of the most debated issues of the digital age. Explore how social media is transforming communication, fueling outrage, weakening meaningful conversations, and reshaping public discourse.

on

Social Media Dialogue or Controversy

4 June, Credent TV | Social Media Dialogue or Controversy has emerged as one of the defining questions of the digital era. What was once celebrated as a revolutionary platform for free expression and democratic participation is increasingly being criticized for fostering conflict, outrage, polarization, and endless digital battles.

Human civilization has always evolved through communication. From spoken words around ancient fires to printed newspapers and television broadcasts, every technological advancement promised to bring people closer together. Social media appeared to be the ultimate realization of that dream. It placed a publishing platform in every pocket and transformed ordinary citizens into content creators, commentators, and influencers.

Yet, while communication has become easier than ever, meaningful dialogue appears to be disappearing.

Today, millions of people begin their day not by asking what happened in the world, but by checking how the world reacted to what they posted. Likes, shares, reposts, comments, and reach have become new forms of social validation. In many ways, digital engagement has become as important to some people as traditional measures of success.

This raises an important question: Has social media strengthened dialogue, or has it simply amplified controversy?

Social Media: The Promise of Digital Democracy

When social media platforms first gained popularity, they were often described as tools of digital democracy. Anyone with internet access could express opinions, share experiences, challenge institutions, and participate in public discussions.

Platforms such as Facebook, X (formerly Twitter), Instagram, LinkedIn, and YouTube gave voice to individuals who previously lacked access to traditional media channels.

According to research published by the Pew Research Center and other digital communication studies, social media has expanded public participation in political discussions, social movements, and civic engagement.

Social Media Dialogue or Controversy – How Conversations Changed

The central concern behind Social Media Dialogue or Controversy lies in the transformation of public discussions.

Modern social platforms contain more words than ever before. Millions of posts are created every minute. Yet despite this abundance of communication, genuine dialogue often feels absent.

Many users no longer enter online discussions to learn or understand. Instead, they arrive prepared to defend positions, attack opposing views, or demonstrate loyalty to ideological groups.

A photograph of a cup of tea can trigger political arguments. A book recommendation can become an ideological battle. A poem can provoke accusations and outrage. In many cases, reactions depend less on what is being said and more on who is saying it. The speaker often matters more than the message.

The Rise of the Permanently Offended Citizen

One of the most fascinating developments of modern digital culture is the emergence of what sociologists increasingly describe as a culture of perpetual offense. A growing number of online users seem permanently prepared to be offended.

They may find reasons for outrage in advertisements, jokes, language choices, historical discussions, entertainment content, or even punctuation marks. This phenomenon creates an environment where emotional reaction frequently replaces thoughtful engagement.

Indian author and public intellectual Purushottam Agrawal explored similar themes in his thought-provoking novel Nakohus, which satirically examines the politics of hurt sentiments and public outrage.

The culture of constant offense has become a major contributor to the Social Media Dialogue or Controversy debate because it shifts focus away from understanding and toward emotional confrontation.

Why Social Media Rewards Conflict

To understand the current environment, one must examine the role of platform algorithms. Most social media companies depend on user engagement. Engagement means attention. Attention generates advertising revenue. Unfortunately, outrage often generates more attention than calm discussion.

Research from institutions including MIT and Oxford Internet Institute has shown that emotionally charged content tends to spread faster than balanced information. As a result:

  • Anger travels quickly.
  • Nuance travels slowly.
  • Conflict attracts clicks.
  • Moderation receives less visibility.

This creates an incentive structure where users are unconsciously rewarded for producing stronger reactions. The digital marketplace often values excitement over accuracy and confrontation over reflection.

The Economics of Outrage

The business model of attention-driven platforms contributes significantly to controversy. Posts that provoke strong emotions frequently receive:

  • More comments
  • More shares
  • More visibility
  • Greater reach

This creates a cycle where increasingly provocative content dominates public attention. In such an environment, thoughtful dialogue struggles to compete.

The Decline of Listening in the Digital Age

A healthy conversation requires two essential components:

  1. Speaking
  2. Listening

Modern digital culture has dramatically expanded opportunities for speaking. Listening, however, has become increasingly rare. Many users read content only long enough to formulate a response. Instead of engaging with ideas, they search for evidence that confirms existing beliefs.

This trend weakens the foundations of democratic discourse. Throughout history, intellectual traditions across cultures emphasized debate, reflection, and respectful disagreement.

Ancient philosophical schools, scholarly traditions, and public forums encouraged participants to challenge ideas while maintaining mutual respect. Today, online discussions often prioritize winning rather than understanding.

Social Media Dialogue or Controversy and Public Discourse

The impact extends beyond individual interactions. When public discourse becomes dominated by conflict, entire societies can suffer. Misinformation spreads more easily. Polarization intensifies. Trust declines. Communities become fragmented. Citizens begin viewing opponents not as people with different perspectives but as enemies.

This is where the question of Social Media Dialogue or Controversy becomes particularly important. The issue is no longer limited to online behavior. It affects democratic institutions, journalism, education, and social cohesion.

Freedom of Expression vs. Responsible Expression

Freedom of expression remains one of the most valuable achievements of modern society. People should have the right to express opinions, criticize authority, and participate in public debate. However, freedom and responsibility must coexist. The challenge facing contemporary society is not a lack of expression. The challenge is learning:

  • How to speak.
  • When to speak.
  • Where to speak.
  • And sometimes when not to speak.

Civilization depends not only on speech but also on restraint. Responsible communication strengthens public trust. Reckless communication weakens it.

Digital Etiquette Matters

Many critics dismiss digital etiquette as old-fashioned. Yet etiquette serves an important purpose. It creates conditions for peaceful coexistence. Online etiquette includes:

  • Respectful disagreement
  • Fact verification
  • Avoiding personal attacks
  • Listening before responding
  • Distinguishing criticism from hostility

Without these principles, freedom can easily devolve into chaos.

What Algorithms Teach Society

Technology does not merely reflect human behavior. It also shapes it. When users repeatedly encounter content rewarded for outrage, they gradually adapt to those incentives. The result is a culture where:

  • Patience seems weak.
  • Nuance appears boring.
  • Anger appears powerful.
  • Reflection appears unnecessary.

This transformation may be one of the most significant social consequences of the digital age. Social media has accelerated communication. It has not necessarily improved understanding.

Can Meaningful Dialogue Return?

Despite growing concerns, there are reasons for optimism. Many educators, journalists, researchers, and civic organizations are actively promoting healthier digital habits. Media literacy programs are helping people evaluate information critically. Educational institutions increasingly emphasize critical thinking and responsible communication. Public awareness regarding misinformation is also improving. Meaningful dialogue can return if users consciously choose engagement over confrontation.

Simple practices can make a difference:

  • Read before reacting.
  • Verify before sharing.
  • Understand before criticizing.
  • Listen before responding.

The Way Forward

The future of social media depends largely on collective choices. Technology itself is not inherently harmful. The challenge lies in how it is used. Platforms can encourage healthier interactions. Governments can support digital literacy. Schools can teach critical thinking. Media organizations can prioritize accuracy over sensationalism. Most importantly, individuals can practice restraint and respect. The solution to digital conflict is not silence. The solution is better conversation.

Social Media Dialogue or Controversy represents one of the defining debates of our time. Social media has democratized communication and provided unprecedented opportunities for participation, creativity, and expression. Yet it has also amplified outrage, rewarded impulsive reactions, and weakened the art of listening.

The challenge facing society is not technological advancement itself but the cultivation of wisdom alongside innovation.

As communication technologies continue to evolve, the future of public discourse will depend on whether people choose noise or understanding, reaction or reflection, controversy or dialogue.

History may ultimately judge our era not by the sophistication of the machines we built, but by whether those machines helped us communicate more meaningfully with one another.
