If his sentence is not overturned, Rahul Gandhi will be prohibited from running in elections for the ensuing eight years.

Rahul Gandhi, a former member of the Congress, travelled to Surat, Gujarat, on Monday to file an appeal against a decision by a lower court that had found him guilty of criminal defamation for saying that “all thieves have the Modi surname.” His petition was approved by the court, and a hearing date was set on April 13. Gandhi was removed from the Lok Sabha on March 24, just twenty-four hours after a lower court in the city found him guilty of defaming the entire Modi community in a case brought by BJP MLA Purnesh Modi. This was done in accordance with a rule that prevents convicted MPs from serving in the Lok Sabha.

A few days later, he was also instructed to leave his official apartment in New Delhi, which was given to him as an MP, by April 22.

While running for the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi made the “Modi surname” statement in April 2019 in Kolar, Karnataka. He compared Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who was his target, to wanted criminals Lalit Modi and Nirav Modi. The former Congress MP received the maximum sentence of two years in prison for his offence, but the sentence was suspended for a month to allow him to appeal the decision. Yet if the sentence is upheld, he will be barred from running in elections for the following eight years.

After contesting his conviction in Surat, Rahul Gandhi said, “In our struggle…

Shortly after a sessions court in Surat accepted his plea against conviction in the 2019 criminal defamation case that led to his expulsion from the Parliament, Rahul Gandhi declared on Monday that the truth was his weapon and his support in the “battle to safeguard democracy.”

BJP criticises Congress for accompanying Rahul Gandhi to Surat as having “misplaced priorities”

If the same number of leaders that travelled with Rahul Gandhi to Surat (to show support) in a criminal case had campaigned or gone during the Gujarat Elections in 2022, they may have gained 1-2 seats more. Guess demonstrates a sense of improper priorities.
