Why are Azerbaijan and Armenia at odds?

Armenia and Azerbaijan have been at odds with one another over the Nagorno-Karabakh territory for more than 20 years. It is not recognised as a sovereign nation by any nation.

Both Eurasian nations have sought to conquer the Nagorno-Karabakh region since 1988.

Despite being a legally recognised part of Azerbaijan, ethnic Armenian communities have been occupying the area since 1994.

On the borders of Iran, Russia, and Turkey, it is a crucial strategic location in the South Caucasus.

In this conflict, more than 6,500 people from both countries lost their lives. To achieve a ceasefire, Russia had to go forward.
