Beginning on January 1, 2024, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Argentina, the United Arab Emirates, and Saudi Arabia will become full members of the BRICS group, joining Brazil, Russia, China, India, and South Africa.

In New Delhi: South African President Cyril Ramaphosa said this afternoon that the BRICS organisation will extend invitations to six states to join as full members. According to Mr. Ramaphosa, these nations—Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Argentina, the United Arab Emirates, and Saudi Arabia—will join South Africa, Brazil, Russia, China, and other members as of January 1 of the next year.

In Johannesburg, Mr. Ramaphosa declared, “We have consensus on the first phase of this BRICS expansion process. We have decided to invite Argentina, Arab Republic of Egypt, Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, Islamic Republic of Iran, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and United Arab Emirates to become full members.”

“The membership will go into effect on January 1st, 2024,” he declared.

We recognise other nations’ interests in forming partnerships with BRICS and have given our foreign ministers the job of further developing the BRICS partnership model and list of potential members, the official continued.

Following Mr. Ramaphosa’s declaration, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is in Johannesburg for the BRICS Summit, greeted all six countries and committed to cooperate with them to continue bringing in new members.

“I would want to take this occasion to welcome these six countries to the BRICS and to express my congratulations to their leaders and citizens. India has strong, long-standing links with each of these nations, and I am confident that we will work together to usher in a new age of collaboration and prosperity.

According to sources in India, India took the initiative in establishing a consensus to choose additional countries to join BRICS. On Wednesday, the Prime Minister made sure to emphasise that India fully supports this as he offered ideas for further member collaboration.

A plea for cooperation in space exploration was made among the recommendations, only hours after India became the fourth country, following the United States, China, and Russia, to successfully soft land on the moon.

In addition to advocating for reform of global financial institutions, such as the World Trade Organisation, the Prime Minister stated that India “fully supports the expansion of the BRICS membership and welcomes moving forward with consensus in this.”

Over 20 nations have already filed for full membership in the BRICS, which has been a main emphasis of this conference. President Xi Jinping of China also endorsed expansion calls, saying, “We need to… accelerate the BRICS expansion process… to pool our strengths.”
