Jammu and Kashmir, the first Union Territory (UT) to introduce the PM Vishwakarma Yojana (PMVY), has made a tremendous stride toward empowering its thriving community of artists and craftspeople. The Central government initiated this project in September 2023 with the goal of highlighting and recognizing the vital role these talented people play in safeguarding and enhancing India’s cultural legacy.

Opening a Novel Chapter

A historic day for the UT occurred on January 2, 2024, when PMVY was officially launched in J&K. Advisor to Lieutenant Governor Rajeev Rai Bhatnagar and Secretary of the Union Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE) were present at the virtual inauguration ceremony. During the ceremony, the first batch of thirty students (known as Viswakarmas) who would specialize in “darzi craft” would also begin their training.

Encouraging Viswakarmas in J&K

The J&K administration is dedicated to the PMVY program even after its first introduction. Advisor Bhatnagar said that the program will shortly be operationalized in every UT district, guaranteeing greater inclusivity and accessibility. By reaching and empowering as many Viswakarmas as possible, this all-encompassing strategy hopes to promote a flourishing artisanal ecosystem throughout J&K.

Principal Aspects of PMVY Certification and Recognition: The program issues PM Vishwakarma ID cards and certificates to craftsmen and crafters, granting them official recognition. Development of Skills and Training: PMVY offers both introductory and advanced training programs with the goal of improving the Viswakarmas’ abilities. The advanced training takes at least 15 days and goes deeper into particular trades than the basic program, which lasts five to seven days. Because of this methodical approach, artisans are able to maintain their competitiveness and relevance in the market through ongoing learning and skill improvement.

Financial Assistance and Incentives: The program gives Viswakarmas a daily allowance of ₹500 during training as a way to further empower them. Additionally, each participant receives a free modern toolbox worth ₹15,000 upon successfully completing the program. This funding eases financial hardships and provides craftsmen with the resources they need to launch their businesses.

Credit Support and Marketing Assistance: PMVY provides connections with credit-based soft loans in addition to training and financial aid. This makes it easier for artists to obtain financing, allowing them to grow their companies and make investments. In addition, the program provides marketing assistance to help Viswakarmas expand their customer base and successfully market their goods.
