The Throne Room, an outstanding example of the grandeur of the British era, inside the Raj Bhavan in Kolkata has undergone a substantial renaming to honour the memory of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, the first Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister of Independent India. On the occasion of Patel’s birth anniversary, Governor C.V. Ananda Bose made this decision as a memorial to the tenacious independence warrior.

The “Unity Room of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel”

The “Throne Room” will now be known as the “Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Unity Room,” honouring the principles of integrity and unity that Sardar Patel promoted in the early years of India’s post-independence. The act of renaming signifies a dedication to upholding the legacy and principles of a key figure in the development of contemporary India.

A New Academic Chair at Calcutta University Honouring Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Governor Ananda Bose also made the announcement about the creation of the new chair. This choice, made in his capacity as the university’s chancellor, demonstrates his commitment to encouraging research into Patel’s contributions and legacy.

In addition to being a historically significant location, the “Throne Room” is also a storehouse for artefacts that reflect the diverse history of India. It features a collection of thrones that were formerly held by well-known historical personalities, such as Tipu Sultan and Lord Wellesley.

A collection of oil paintings depicting some of India’s most well-known figures, such as Jawaharlal Nehru, Mahatma Gandhi, Subhas Chandra Bose, and former West Bengal Chief Minister B.C. Roy, grace this room. These pieces of art tell the story of India’s struggle for freedom and development in a visual manner.

An urn that once held Mahatma Gandhi’s ashes adds to the room’s historical significance. When it is on display, it gives guests a direct connection to the Father of the Nation and his ongoing impact on the culture and history of India.
