Indian students who successfully complete their studies will be awarded a Bachelor of Science from the University of Melbourne, with the option of having the degree awarded by their home institution. Furthermore, in their final year, Indian students can study up to six master’s subjects, allowing them to fast-track a master’s degree in a variety of disciplines such as science, engineering, public health, and data science.

The announcement was made in Mumbai by the VC of Melbourne University, who is part of the Prime Minister of Australia’s Trade Delegation to India.

“The new dual degree is the logical progression from the Bachelor of Science (Blended), which was co-designed and quality assured by the University of Melbourne and is now available at seven institutions across the country. The University of Melbourne is excited to keep expanding our programmes in order to provide more Indian students with direct pathways to completion of their studies “Maskell explained.

We are pleased to be collaborating with esteemed local universities to be a part of the internationalisation of education in India and at home in Australia, he continued, as the demand for our current programmes continues to rise.

The first partners in the Bachelor of Science Dual Degree are the University of Madras, SPPU, and GITAM. Discussions are currently being held with additional institutions who hope to start offering the dual degree in 2024.

Last year, the University Grants Commission (UGC) announced that higher education institutions in India and abroad could offer joint or dual degrees and twinning programmes and published the rules governing these programmes.

The approved regulations define a “twinning programme” as a cooperative arrangement whereby students enrolled in an Indian higher educational institution may complete their study programmes partially in India while adhering to the relevant UGC regulations and partially in a foreign higher educational institution.
