New Delhi: The phrase “President of Bharat” has been used in place of the conventional “President of India” in an official invitation to heads of state attending the weekend G20 meeting. As the nation hosts the major event, there has been a noticeable change in terminology on a global scale.

“President of Bharat” rather than “President of India” appears on President Draupadi Murmu’s invitation to G20 foreign leaders and Chief Ministers for a luncheon on September 9.

According to officials, this is the first time India’s nomenclature for a formal function has changed.

Officials note that the word “Bharat” appears in the Constitution as well. According to Article 1 of the Constitution, “India, which is also known as Bharat, shall be a Union of States.”

The word “Bharat” was also used in a G20 pamphlet called “Bharat, The Mother Of Democracy” that was distributed to international delegations to promote India’s G20 leadership and its long history of democratic values.

The booklet’s introduction reads, “Taking the consent of the people in governance has been part of life in Bharat, that is India, since the earliest recorded history.”

One among the first to applaud the significant improvement was Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. He wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter, “REPUBLIC OF BHARAT – happy and proud that our civilisation is marching ahead boldly towards AMRIT KAAL.”

While BJP leaders applauded the decision, the opposition reacted angrily to the invitation to the president.

A public discussion has been sparked by the BJP’s recent decision to modify the term from “President of India” to “President of Bharat” on official G20 summit invites. How can the BJP demolish “INDIA”? The 135 crore Indians who make up the nation, not a political party, are its true owners. Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Raghav Chadha wrote on Facebook that “our national identity is not the BJP’s personal property that it can modify on whims and fancies.”

Leaders of the Congress also disparaged the BJP.

Just two days prior, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), the ruling party’s ideological forebear, had proposed that the nation be referred to as Bharat rather than India.

“We need to start referring to India as Bharat instead of India. We occasionally utilise India to help English speakers understand. This develops naturally. But we have to cease utilising this…No matter where you go in the world, the name of the nation Bharat will always be Bharat. Bharat must be used both orally and in writing, according to RSS leader Mohan Bhagwat.

After the opposition alliance adopted the term INDIA – Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance – in July, the India vs. Bharat discussion heated up.

The conflict is between the NDA and India, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and India, and their (the BJP’s) ideology and India, according to the statement. You are aware of what transpires when someone stands up to India, who triumphs,” Rahul Gandhi said at a press conference.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi accused the opposition of attempting to cover up their “sins” by exploiting the moniker, which led to a significant backlash from the ruling BJP. In order to conceal their schemes against the poor, they changed their name from UPA to INDIA. The name INDIA was chosen with no intention of displaying patriotism, but rather to plunder the nation, he claimed.
