Alt News co-founder Mohammed Zubair, who has been the target of numerous FIRs in recent weeks, was today granted bail in one more case but will remain in custody due to two further instances.
In the case brought by the Delhi Police in relation to a tweet from 2018 for which he was detained last month, Mohammed Zubair was granted bail. Due to two instances filed in Uttar Pradesh, he will remain behind bars.
The co-founder of the fact-checking website Alt News has asked the Supreme Court to dismiss six proceedings that the UP Police had brought against him.
Additionally, he requested that the Special Investigation Team established to look into the cases be disbanded.
The Delhi Police detained Mohammed Zubair on June 27 in connection with his four-year-old tweet in which he shared a screenshot from a well-known Hindi film.
Only a few days after he flagged a video of suspended BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma making offensive remarks about Prophet Mohammed during a TV debate, he was charged and taken into custody.
Several cases were filed in UP at the same time he petitioned for bail.
In response to a tweet in which he referred to some right-wing leaders as “hate mongers,” three complaints were filed in Lakhimpur Kheri, Hathras, and Sitapur.
A Sudarshan News employee filed a lawsuit in Lakhimpur accusing Mr. Zubair of misrepresenting the public over the coverage of the Israel-Palestine conflict on his channel.
Mr. Zubair claimed he was receiving death threats at a hearing on Tuesday and asked the Supreme Court to give him bail. The UP government has four weeks to respond to Mr. Zubair’s petition, according to Justices DY Chandrachud and AS Bopanna.
The Uttar Pradesh police established a Special Investigation Team that day to look into numerous cases against him.
