International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples

Credent TV | Every year on August 9th, the international community comes together to celebrate and honour the world’s indigenous people and to call for greater recognition and respect for their rights on this International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples. There will be a celebration of indigenous peoples’ successes and efforts to better the globe in areas like environmental preservation. Originally announced by the UN GA on December 1994, it commemorated the inaugural meeting of the UN Working Group on Indigenous Populations of the Sub-Commission on the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights in 1982.

About International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples

As part of the inaugural International Decade of the World’s Indigenous Peoples, the United Nations General Assembly declared December 9 of each year to be International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples (1995–2004). The Second International Decade, “A Decade for Action and Dignity,” was declared by the Assembly in 2004 and will run from 2005 to 2015. In order to convey the UN’s message on indigenous peoples, people from all over the world are urged to take part in the celebration of this day. The activities may involve discussions and lessons on indigenous cultures to help participants learn more and develop a deeper respect for indigenous peoples.

Status of Indigenous Languages

In 2016, it was estimated that 2,680 distinct native languages were in danger of being lost forever. It is for these reasons that the United Nations has declared 2019 to be the International Year of Indigenous Languages.

Symbols of International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples

The UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues has selected Rebang Dewan’s artwork as its official visual identification. Rebang is a Chakma youngster from Bangladesh. It has also appeared on promotional materials for the International Day of Indigenous Peoples of the World. It has a globe that resembles the planet earth and two ears of green leaves facing each other. A image of a handshake (between two separate hands) is shown within the globe, and a landscape backdrop is seen above the handshake. Blue surrounds the handshake and the scenery backdrop at the top and bottom of the globe.
