Hekani Jakhalu

Hekani Jakhalu, who entered politics 7 months ago, won, Salhutuano Cruz won by 7 votes

Today’s elections will provide results in the three North-Eastern states of Meghalaya, Tripura, and Nagaland. Election day was February 16 in Tripura and February 27 in Meghalaya-Nagaland. While waiting for the outcome, citizens of all three states focused on Nagaland. Despite the fact that Nagaland became a state in 1963, 60 years have passed, and the electorate is now choosing the CM for the 14th time, no woman MLA has been chosen from any seat to date. This this moment, the custom was broken.

Hekani Jakhalu of the Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) won the Dimapur III seat to become the first female Legislator of Nagaland. With 1536 votes, he outpolled Lok Janshakti Party (Ramvilas) candidate Egeto Zhimomi. 14,395 people voted for Hekani, 47. She only recently entered politics, seven months ago.

Salhutuano Kruse, Hekani Jakhalu’s own party, has won the West Angami seat. He won by a mere 7 votes. Krause received 7078 votes. He prevailed over Kenizhakho Nakhro, an independent. This was Salhuatuano Cruz, 56,’s second election. In 2018, she ran for the West Angami seat as well. For 24 years, Kraus has worked for an Organization.

There were 184 candidates running for the 60 assembly seats in Nagaland, and just 4 of them were women. Kahuli Sema of the BJP lost the Atoiju seat in these by 602 votes. Picto of the Nationalist Congress Party beat him. Just 1704 votes were cast for Rosie Thomson, the fourth female candidate for Congress. She occupied position five.

In Nagaland, there are the same number of female voters (49.79%) as male voters, which means that both genders elect the government equally. Despite this, his entry into politics has always faced criticism. In Meghalaya, on the other hand, where there are 60 assembly seats, women have a lot of sway over both society and the government.

Several tribes of Meghalaya, in the North East, have women as the head of the household. Boys do not have any claim to the land; daughters do. Here, the birth of a female child is celebrated.

I talked to the women leaders of all the three major parties of Nagaland NDPP, BJP and Congress and asked them

  • Why are women unable to enter politics in the state?
  • What are the difficulties faced by women in politics?
  • Why don’t parties give tickets to more women?
  • What did the parties do for women to enter politics?

I initially went to Hekani Jakhalu, a candidate for the NDPPhome ,’s to get the answers to these questions. Hekani Jakhalu, a lawyer by trade, resides in Dimapur’s Wunagram Colony. It will be dawn at six. There had been a lot of activity in the home since the morning when I went since the election campaign was in full swing.

Only in Nagaland does the sun rise first in the nation. In such a case, the majority of individuals in this area start working at around 6-7 o’clock. At Hekani Jakhalu’s home, visitors began arriving and departing as the day went on.

On the exterior of Hekani Jakhalu’s home, or rather the bungalow, a sizable election office could be seen being constructed. Outside the office, his fans and gunmen were visible. I was informed by the staff that Hekani Jakhalu would conduct interviews after meeting individuals when I sought to meet her. Hekani Jakhalu arrived after around 30 minutes of waiting. She led me out into the grass in front of the home. The dialogue began at this point. This discussion comes before the election.

No one from family in politics, prepared from 7 months ago

Union minister and CM friend, that’s why there were talks of going into politics

Hekani Jakhalu responds, “Many of my friends are union ministers from the North East,” when asked about entering politics. Some people occupy important political roles, while others are chief ministers. Many often assume that I entered politics easily because of this, but let me assure you that this was never my intention. As I took part in a local MLA’s programme in May and June of last year, things started to happen that I would also get into politics.

People have less faith in women candidates in Nagaland

Why haven’t there been any female legislators in Nagaland yet? Hekani Jakhalu responds by saying, “Because a lot of discourse occurred on this, but no effort was done. Women were allowed a reservation for Panchayat elections, but there was backlash. There was bloodshed everywhere.

After this, several studies were conducted, and it was discovered that the Naga people only prefer to see men in positions of leadership. Women candidates are less trusted. I found out that the women in the state are not financially independent when I asked questions about it as well. They have always been repressed for this reason.
