Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, made a hint about major improvements for GPT-5 in an interview

According to a recent rumor, OpenAI may introduce GPT-5 (Generative Pre-Trained Transformers 5), the company’s next generation of artificial intelligence (AI) model, in the upcoming months. The AI model will replace GPT-4, which was formally released in March 2023 and is presently in use by the company’s well-known chatbot, ChatGPT. According to rumors, the fifth generation of GPT will also include new features including autonomous AI agents. Remarkably, OpenAI CTO Mira Murati recently disclosed that Sora, the company’s first text-to-video AI model, might debut later this year as well.

GPT-5 may be published around June or July, which would be in the middle of the year, according to a Business Insider article. Some of OpenAI’s enterprise clients apparently received access to the new AI model, and they reported that it is more capable and has major improvements over the previous model. The magazine did not identify the sources, but they described GPT-5 as “really good” and “materially better.”

It’s been reported that ChatGPT’s new base model would also come with new features. According to the article, one such feature would be AI agents that may be instructed to carry out duties independently. AI agents resemble GPTs, which are trainable tiny chatbots that were introduced in November 2023 and can be tailored to perform particular tasks. Nevertheless, it appears that a new skill called unsupervised operability is being added. It is unknown how these AI bots work in more detail.

However, there is no firm date for when the AI model will be released. The study states that OpenAI is still in the process of training the model, so there could potentially be delays. When asked when GPT-5 may be released, CEO Sam Altman said, “I don’t know,” in an interview with Lex Fridman. That’s the truthful response. He did, however, also point out that the distinction between GPT-4 and GPT-5 will be comparable to that between GPT-3 and GPT-4.

Murati discussed Sora, another recent project from OpenAI, last week. Sora can make one-minute films using only text prompts. According to the CTO of the company, Sora may go on sale in the upcoming months at a pricing point comparable to DALL-E.
