Passkey allows WhatsApp users on iOS to authenticate into their accounts using Face ID, Touch ID, or passcode
WhatsApp is adding a new security feature to its iOS app. The instant messaging network said on Wednesday that it will provide passkey functionality for iPhone users in the newest edition of its app. The Meta-owned platform first started working on this feature in January 2024, when a passkey-related menu appeared for beta users. After around three months, it is currently being sent to iOS users worldwide. Notably, the passwordless login option is already available in the WhatsApp for Android application.
WhatsApp announced in a post on X (previously known as Twitter) that users would now be able to enter into their accounts by Face ID, Touch ID, or passcode While the business did not specify which iOS versions are supported, an earlier report revealed that the feature is compatible with iOS 17 and later. This implies that users with the iPhone XR or later will be able to create a passkey for their account.

A passkey is an alternative login authentication technique that provides greater security than standard methods like SMS codes. This system, developed by the FIDO Alliance and supported by tech heavyweights such as Apple, Google, and Microsoft, employs public key cryptography. This generates two sets of keys, one of which is stored in the platform’s cloud and the other remaining with the user For iOS users, the user key is likely to be kept in Apple’s Keychain system, which can be accessed via Face ID or Touch ID. The account is authenticated when both keys match. This approach is more effective in preventing phishing and other related scams.
