The Crumbleys are accused of purchasing their son the 9mm SIG Sauer weapon he used to carry out the shooting while ignoring signs that he had mental health issues

The mother of a teenage boy who shot dead four students at his Michigan high school took the stand on Thursday at her high-profile trial on involuntary manslaughter charges.

Prosecutors claim that Jennifer Crumbley and her spouse, James, are the first parents of a school shooter to be charged with a felony in the US due to their child’s activities.

Their 17-year-old son, Ethan Crumbley, is incarcerated for life for the shooting at Oxford High School on November 30, 2021, which claimed the lives of four pupils, ages 14 to 17, and injured six more as well as a teacher.

The Crumbley family is accused of purchasing the 9mm SIG Sauer weapon that the shooter used and disobeying their son’s mental health concerns.

In March, James Crumbley will face a separate trial.

In her testimony, Jennifer Crumbley stated that her husband had given their son the gun as an early Christmas present just a few days prior to the attack, and the following day she had taken him to a shooting range.

The firearm was for her son “to use at the shooting range only,” she stated, and her husband was in charge of keeping it stored at their house.

Crumbley said before the jury that despite her son’s bad scores and repeated failure to turn in homework, she never had any conversations regarding discipline with his teachers.

She claimed that although Ethan was worried about his post-high school plans, “it wasn’t to the point where I felt he needed to see a psychiatrist or mental health professional.”

When asked how they were getting along, Crumbley replied, “I felt like we were pretty close.” We would converse. Together, we accomplished a great deal. I felt that I had an open door and that he could come to me with anything since I trusted him.”

“Alerted”

She claimed she had no grounds to think her son was capable of committing such a horrific crime.

“As a parent, you spend your whole life trying to protect your child from other dangers,” Crumbley stated. You never would have guessed that you would have to keep your kids from hurting other people.

“That was the hardest thing I had to stomach, that my child hurt other people,” she stated. “I wish he would have killed us instead.”

Although teen-perpetrated school shootings have grown commonplace in America, parents being charged is a first.

On the day of the shooting, a teacher discovered a drawing on Ethan’s desk that “alarmed” her, so she called the Crumbleys to the school.

After presenting the drawing to the parents, it was suggested that they enroll their son in counseling.

Their youngster went back to school after they allegedly refused to take him home.

Later, he went into a bathroom, came out with the gun hidden in his backpack, and fired over thirty rounds.

November saw the guilty plea of the father of an Illinois man who is suspected of killing seven people in July 2022 on misdemeanor counts of “reckless conduct” for assisting his son in obtaining the assault gun that was used in the mass shooting.

The maximum term for an involuntary manslaughter conviction is 15 years in prison.
