President Zelenskiy of Ukraine has asked Switzerland to organize an international peace conference to find a solution to the conflict that Russia’s invasion started

In order to end the crisis that Russia’s intrusion into Ukraine caused, a worldwide peace summit is scheduled to take place in Switzerland on February 24, 2022, as confirmed by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy. Switzerland, a country well-known for its impartiality and experience mediating disputes, will lead negotiations toward a settlement.

Setting

Zelenskiy disclosed that the participants at the peace summit had not yet been decided upon at a press conference held in Bern with his Swiss counterpart Viola Amherd. He did, however, underline—and in a way that suggested inclusivity—the invitation to nations that support Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Important Points

Zelenskiy issued an open invitation to all countries supporting the sovereignty of Ukraine, highlighting in particular the presence of the Global South as a symbol of global opposition to Russian aggression.

Summit Logistics: No precise information was given regarding the date or location of the summit in Switzerland. Zelenskiy may have met Chinese Premier Li Qiang and other international leaders while in Switzerland for the international Economic Forum in Davos.

Zelenskiy’s peace plan, which was previously presented at the Group of 20 summit, stipulates that all detainees must be released, Russian troops must depart, and Ukraine’s territorial integrity must be restored.

Reaction of the Kremlin: The Kremlin declared that negotiations on Ukraine’s peace proposals in Davos would be fruitless without Russian participation.

A major event with consequences is the declaration that Switzerland would host a worldwide peace summit at the invitation of President Zelenskiy of Ukraine.

A diplomatic element is added by Zelenskiy’s emphasis on welcoming countries that uphold Ukraine’s sovereignty, especially those in the Global South.

One important component is the peace formula, which stipulates territorial integrity, troop withdrawal, and an end to hostilities.

The ambiguity surrounding the summit’s schedule and venue, along with the Kremlin’s rejection of the Davos discussions, highlight how complicated the geopolitical environment is. Competitive exam takers should concentrate on learning the intricacies of diplomacy, the background of Swiss mediation, and Zelenskiy’s suggested peace formula.
