YouTube has stated that in videos where the creators have not included disclosure, labels will be placed automatically

In an effort to curb artificial intelligence (AI)-generated content on the network, YouTube has requested that content providers identify any instances in which a video has been modified or created using AI tools. The massive video-streaming company made the news after revising its content policy in November 2023 to increase openness about the uploading of AI videos. Additionally, the Google-owned platform disclosed that when a creator uploads a video on a delicate topic without including the AI content label, the platform will automatically add labels.

“We’re beginning to roll out a new tool today that will require creators to share when the content they’re uploading is meaningfully altered or synthetically generated and seems realistic,” YouTube announced in a blog post on Monday. In order to make adding the label easier for authors, it also stated that the disclosure procedure will be incorporated into the workflow for uploading videos.

According to a screenshot included in the report, the notice can be found directly beneath the disclaimer for paid advertising on the uploading workflow’s initial page for creators. The three questions in this new section, “Altered Content,” are whether the video forces someone to say or do something they did not say or do, whether it modifies footage of an actual event or location, and if it features a situation that looks realistic but did not happen. If any of these components are present in the video, the user must select “Yes,” in which case YouTube will automatically add a label to the uploaded video’s description.

A new section called “How this content was made” will have the label added to it. It will say, “Altered or synthetic content – Sound or visuals were significantly edited or digitally generated.” The updated labels will appear in both Shorts and long-format videos. Additionally, a more noticeable tag will be positioned above the channel name for shorts. According to YouTube, the labels will initially appear to users of the Android and iOS apps, and then they will be added to the TV and web interface. The workflow will show up on the web interface first for creators.

The massive video streaming company would also penalize nondisclosure of AI-generated material. YouTube made it clear that while it will give artists some time to get used to these new guidelines, in the long run, it will impose penalties such as the removal of content, suspension from the YouTube Partner Program, and other things.

In November 2023, YouTube revealed its revised content policy and emphasis on AI-generated content in response to the growing number of deepfakes. Disclosure tools and a feature allowing users to ask for the removal of “AI-generated or other synthetic or altered content that simulates an identifiable individual, including their face or voice” were highlighted. To safeguard the content of record labels and musicians, further regulations were also declared.
