On January 12–13, 2021, the Indian Navy conducted the first phase of the coastal defence exercise “Sea Vigil” along the entire coastline and island territories of India.

With this exercise, the nation’s coastal defence system, which had undergone a complete overhaul following the 26/11 terror attacks in Mumbai, was intended to be verified.

The Indian Navy, Coast Guard, Marine Police of 13 coastal States and Union Territories, as well as other maritime stakeholders, all participated heavily in the exercise.

The extent of the exercise TROPEX

The exercise, which took place in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR), which includes the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal, covered a total area of over 21 million square nautical miles and covered distances of 4,300 nautical miles from north to south up to 35 degrees South and 5,000 nautical miles from the Persian Gulf to the northern coast of Australia.

This exercise is being held in the Indian Ocean Region and its adjacent waters with the goal of testing the Indian Navy’s warfare readiness in a complex multi-faceted plan set in the context of the current geo-strategic environment.

This exercise also seeks to validate the Navy’s offensive-defence capabilities, safeguard national interests in the maritime domain, and promote stability and peace in the Indian Ocean region. The TROPEX exercise is overseen by Naval Headquarters in Port Blair, which includes all three Commands of the Indian Navy and the Tri-Services Command.
